The Maryland Terrapins travel to Syracuse to play the Orange on Saturday afternoon.
Maryland dropped to 2-1 on the year after losing at home to West Virginia 40-37 last weekend. The Terps beat James Madison and South Florida to begin the year before dropping their first game last Saturday. Against West Virginia, Maryland gained 447 total yards while West Virginia gained a whopping 694 total yards. West Virginia would have dominated the game if it weren’t for the 4 turnovers that Maryland forced. The Terps turned the ball over once and committed 7 penalties for 71 yards. QB C.J. Brown completed 19 of 35 passes for 241 yards and 1 touchdown to go along with his one interception. Brown also led the team in rushing with 18 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown. Star WR Stefon Diggs caught 5 balls for an outstanding 127 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the Terps secondary allowed 511 passing yards and allowed the Mountaineers to convert on 11 3rd downs. Maryland’s defense will need to put this game behind them as they only gave up 24 points combined in their first two games.

The Syracuse Orange improved to 2-0 after beating Central Michigan 40-3 last weekend. Syracuse beat Villanova to open the season and then had a week off before destroying Central Michigan last Saturday. In the win, Syracuse produced 464 total yards, with 289 of those yards coming on the ground. QB Terrel Hunt completed 20 of 30 passes for 175 yards and 1 touchdown. Hunt also carried the ball 13 times for 92 yards and 3 touchdowns. WR Ashton Broyld caught 4 balls for 42 yards, while RB Adonis Ameen-Moore carried the ball 9 times for 106 yards. The Syracuse defense gave up only 217 total yards and only 34 yards on the ground. The Orange defense is averaging 14.5 points against in their first two games against two mediocre teams. However, Syracuse is allowing almost 200 yards throw the air per game, so they will need to improve against Maryland or they will be in for a long game. Syracuse will be back at home for this matchup.
Maryland did not play well on the road two weeks ago against South Florida. The Terps defense did not look good last week and they will need to contain Hunt and the Syracuse offense this Saturday on the road. Syracuse plays well at home and I think they will earn themselves a victory this weekend against an inconsistent and sometimes sloppy Maryland squad. I’ll take the home team to cover the small spread and I also think this will be a high scoring affair.
