The Akron Zips travel to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers on Saturday.
Akron dropped to 1-2 on the season after losing at home to Marshall 48-17 last weekend. The Zips won their home opener against Howard and then lost at Penn State by 18 points in their second game of the season. Against Marshall, the Zips were outgained 526 to 343. Akron turned the ball over four times and committed 10 penalties in the loss. The Zips converted on 3rd down only twice out of thirteen times. QB Kyle Pohl completed only 17 of 37 passes for 151 yards and 2 interceptions. WR Zach D’Orazio had a team-high 5 catches for 69 yards, while RB Manny Morgan carried the ball 8 times for a team-high 356 yards and 1 touchdown. The Zips defense was dominated thru the air and on the ground throughout the contest. Akron will need to play much better if they even want to make the game somewhat competitive this weekend; as they play arguably the best team they will face all year on the road.

The Pittsburgh Panthers dropped to 3-1 on the season after losing at home 24-20 to Iowa last weekend. The Panthers won their first three games of the season over Delaware, Boston College, and FIU. The Panthers are scoring an average of 38.5 points per game and allowing only 17.3 points per game, which rank 35th and 20th in the country. The Panthers rushing attack ranks 11th in the country, averaging over 304 yards per game on the ground so far this season. The passing attack is led by sophomore QB Chad Voytik, who has thrown for 534 yards with 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions for the Panthers. Voytik’s main target is start WR Tyler Boyd, who has a team-high 21 catches for 293 yards and 4 touchdowns. Sophomore RB James Conner is off to a great start this season, rushing for 699 yards and 9 touchdowns. Pittsburgh will look to put the Iowa loss behind them and get a win at home before the bulk of conference play begins the following week.
The Panthers, with elite players like Voytik, Conner, and Boyd, should make a run at an ACC championship this season or at least an appearance in the conference championship game. As for this game, Akron is catching Pittsburgh on the wrong day as the Panthers are coming off a tough loss at home to Iowa. I think Akron may keep it close early, but Pittsburgh will prove to be too much and will run away with this one.
