The TCU Horned Frogs and SMU Mustangs meet Saturday at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
This will be the TCU Horned Frogs first road appearance this season, and they’ve gotten off to a fast start. The thing that stands out the most with the Horned Frogs is their defense that is allowing just 10.5 points, 205.5 yards and has forced seven turnovers and four sacks. Texas Christian is usually one of the better defensive teams in the country and so far that’s been the case again this season. Paul Dawson leads TCU with 24 tackles and four tackles for loss, while Mike Tuaua has two sacks. Offensively, the Horned Frogs go as far as quarterback Trevone Boykin carries them, as he’s completing 64.4 percent of his passes for 578 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s also leading TCU with 121 rushing yards. Boykin is off to his best start of his career as a passer and the Horned Frogs are due for some big time success if he can keep it up the rest of the season.
USA TODAY Sports
The SMU Mustangs are still looking for their first win of the season and have had no luck at all on either side of the ball. In three games, Southern Methodist has scored just 12 combined points and is averaging just 194 yards per game. SMU as a team is completing just 51.8 percent of its passes and averaging 1.1 yards per carry. Besides Der'rikk Thompson, who has 167 receiving yards on 11 receptions, SMU has had zero offensive success or showed any promise. It’s safe to say that SMU is the worst offensive team in the country right now and that isn’t likely to change with the injury to quarterback Neal Burcham. Defensively, the SMU Mustangs are allowing 530 yards per game and have forced three turnovers and one sack. Darrion Richardson leads SMU with 20 tackles and Stephon Sanders has 1.5 tackles for loss.
The Horned Frogs are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 games following a ATS win and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Mustangs are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Horned Frogs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
I really hate laying a truckload of points on the road. However, SMU doesn't look like it could beat a high school team with the way they've been playing this season. I expect a blowout here.
