The banged up Rice Owls go on the road to take the field with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.
The Rice Owls were outscored 45-42 by the Old Dominion Monarchs to begin 2014 at 0-3. This was nothing but a shootout with the Monarchs connecting on a 25 yard field goal as time expired to get the win. The difference here was Taylor Heinicke threw for 430 yards and five TD's while Rice quarterback Driphus Jackson threw for 175 yards before injuring his shoulder with Tyler Stehling tossing for 67 yards in relief. The Owls made their living on the ground in the second half with Jowan Davis rambling for 150 yards on 24 totes with Darik Dillard adding another 70 yards with three touchdowns.

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles haven't had much success over the past several years but after Saturday's 21-20 victory over Appalachian State USM is 2-1. The Golden Eagles never trailed but were the beneficiary of a botched Mountaineers PAT with six seconds remaining. ASU led in yardage 455-329 but were hurt by three turnovers while the Golden Eagles scored when the opportunity was there. The rushing attack wasn't working but the passing of Nick Mullens saved Southern Miss. Mullens connected on 22-35 for 268 yards with a touchdon and two interceptions which was solid production with Appalachian State expecting the pass.
Southern Mississippi has a shot a their third win already and face a Rice squad that won't be close to 100%. My gut says the Owls have their backs against the wall and find a way to get the job done. I need Jackson under center and pray their defense gets stops to bet this...
