The Western Michigan Broncos travel to Blacksburg to play the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday.
Western Michigan improved to 2-1 on the year after beating Murray State 45-14 last weekend. The Broncos lost to Purdue on the road by 9 points in their season opener before beating Idaho on the road by 12 points. Western Michigan is putting up some big numbers offensively early on in the season but they have played some mediocre defenses. The Broncos are averaging over 41 points per game, to go along with 237.3 passing yards and 277.7 rushing yards per game. The Western Michigan defense is averages at best, allowing 30 points a game on average in the first three games. Sophomore QB Zach Terrell has thrown for 712 yards and 6 touchdowns this year. Sophomore WR Daniel Braverman leads the team in receiving with 22 catches for 313 yards and 2 touchdowns. Freshman RB Jarvion Franklin has been the star of the offense, rushing for 542 yards and 9 touchdowns thus far. The Broncos will now face their toughest test of the season in one of the loudest environments in college football.

The Virginia Tech Hokies dropped to 2-2 on the year after losing at home to Georgia Tech 27-24 last weekend. The Hokies were thought to be an elite team after they went into Columbus and knocked off the #8 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. However, in typical Virginia Tech fashion, the Hokies lost to what was thought to be an inferior opponent, East Carolina, the next week at home. To make matters even worse for the Hokies, who held a lead for the majority of the game, they let the game slip away against Georgia Tech last weekend. Virginia Tech is averaging over 28 points per game, while allowing over 21 points per game. The Hokies are averaging only 141 yards rushing and 265 yards passing per game so far this season. Junior QB Michael Brewer has thrown for 1,045 yards with 7 touchdowns and 8 interceptions this season. Freshman WR Isaiah Ford has a team-high 260 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns, while fellow freshman RB Shai McKenzie has 182 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns. The Hokies will have their hands full once again this weekend and it will be interesting to see how Virginia Tech comes out to play after two straight home losses.
I believe that Coach Beamer and the Hokies will come out fired up on Saturday and they won’t let the two straight home losses bring down the entire season. Western Michigan should be able to put up some points, but I don’t think they can stop the Hokies offense. I would lean towards laying the points with the Hokies, but I think the better play is on the over.
