The Florida Atlantic Owls and Florida International Golden Panthers will square off Thursday night at FIU Stadium.
The Florida Atlantic Owls have won two of their last three games and are starting to show improvement on the offensive end. The return of quarterback Jaquez Johnson has really helped FAU’s production, as he’s completing 62.8 percent of his passes for 773 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. Johnson is Florida Atlantic’s bread and butter offensively, and the Owls are 5-1 SU in his career when he tops 200 passing yards. Running the football hasn’t come easy for Florida Atlantic, as Jay Warren is the only player with any real success with 377 yards on 72 carries. As a team FAU is averaging just 3.8 yards per carry and has just four rushing touchdowns. In order for Florida Atlantic to be more consistent offensively, wide receiver William Dukes has to provide a bigger impact, as he has just eight catches for 145 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the Florida Atlantic Owls are allowing 502.6 yards per game and have forced seven turnovers and 11 sacks. Damian Parms leads Florida Atlantic with 45 tackles and Trey Hendrickson has three sacks.

The Florida International Golden Panthers are still trying to find themselves with a 2-3 start. Florida International isn’t much better than Florida Atlantic on the offensive end, as the Golden Panthers rely on a defense that’s allowing just 317.8 yards per game. FIU has forced an incredible 17 turnovers in five games and 18 sacks, while allowing 20 or less points in three of their five games. Demarkus Perkins leads Florida International with 35 tackles and Michael Wakefield has 5.5 sacks. Offensively, Alex McGough is completing just 45.5 percent of his passes for seven touchdowns and two interceptions. And besides Alex Gardner, who has 313 rushing yards on 64 carries, the Golden Panthers have no running game to speak of. Jonnu Smith is Florida International's biggest offensive threat, as he has 311 yards and three touchdowns.
The Owls are 14-2 ATS in their last 16 road games and 21-6 ATS in their last 27 games overall. The Golden Panthers are 5-2 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The underdog is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
This is the game of the year for these two Florida schools that are looking to take that next step in improving their program. The Golden Panthers defense and the help from the home crowd should keep FIU in this ball game. Not sure why the spread is a little high, but I'm going to take the points in this game that should come down to the wire.
