The Louisville Cardinals and Syracuse Orange will play Friday night at the Carrier Dome.
The Louisville Cardinals have held their own this season with a solid 4-1 record and are being carried with a great defense. Louisville is allowing 14 points per game, 225.3 yards, and have forced 13 turnovers and 19 sacks. Louisville has won 23 straight games when holding their opponent to 21 or less points. Keith Kelsey leads Louisville with 28 tackles and Lorenzo Mauldin has four tackles. Offensively, the Louisville Cardinals are likely going to be without quarterback Will Gardner, and freshman Reggie Bonnafon is going to get the nod. Bonnafon is completing 57.7 percent of his passes for 357 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. Even without DeVante Parker, Louisville has plenty of weapons on the outside including James Quick and Eli Rogers, a duo that has produced over 500 receiving yards and three touchdowns. It’s the Cardinals ground game that needs to pick up the pace as they’re averaging just 3.7 yards per carry despite rushing for 11 touchdowns. Brandon Radcliff is coming off a 100-yard performance against Wake Forest.
The Syracuse Orange have lost two straight and could use a win here before heading into a tough ACC schedule. Syracuse is a team that hasn’t changed much as it continues to rely on solid defense and a power running game. The Orange average 5.7 yards per carry led by quarterback Terrel Hunt and running back Prince-Tyson Gulley, a duo that has produced over 500 yards and seven touchdowns. Passing wise, Syracuse is completing less than 60 percent of its passes but has a solid receiver in Jarrod West, who is coming off an eight-catch performance against Notre Dame. Defensively, the Louisville Cardinals are allowing 23.5 points per game, 374.5 yards and have forced seven turnovers and 13 sacks. Cameron Lynch leads Syracuse with 33 tackles and 4.5 sacks, while Dyshawn Davis has two forced fumbles.
The Cardinals are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 road games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Orange are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss. Cardinals are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 meetings, while the underdog is 8-1 ATS in their last 9 meetings.
Even with freshman QB on the field, the Louisville Cardinals are by far the more talented team in this matchup and should be able to squeeze out the victory. Syracuse still won't be able to take advantage due to subpar talent on both sides of the ball.
