The Virginia Tech Hokies travel to North Carolina to play the Tar Heels on Saturday afternoon.
The Virginia Tech Hokies improved to 3-2 on the season after beating Western Michigan last weekend, 35-17. The Hokies won their first two games of the year over William & Mary and Ohio State before losing back to back games to East Carolina and Georgia Tech at home. Virginia Tech has just played average on both sides of the ball this season. The Hokies average 29.8 points per game and are giving up 20.4 points per game on average, which rank 71st and 36th in the country. Virginia Tech is averaging over 247 passing yards per game led by junior QB Michael Brewer. Brewer has thrown for 1,223 yards with 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season. Freshman WR Isaiah Ford leads the team in receiving with 24 catches for 297 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Hokies are averaging over 174 yards per game on the ground with freshman RB Marshawn Williams leading the way with 290 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Hokies defense allowed 28 and 27 points to Georgia Tech and East Carolina, but held Western Michigan to only 17 points last weekend. Virginia Tech will look to earn their second road win of the year this weekend.

North Carolina dropped to 2-2 on the season after losing at Clemson 50-35 on Saturday. North Carolina won their first two games of the season over Liberty and San Diego State before dropping to straight games to East Carolina and Clemson. The Tar Heels defense is awful to say the least. North Carolina allowed East Carolina to score 70 points and Clemson to put up 50 in their two losses. The Tar Heels are giving up an average of 44 points per game, which ranks 126th in the country. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels offense is averaging over 40 points per game this season. Junior QB Marquise Williams has thrown for 896 yards with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Williams has also rushed for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Tar Heels. William’s main targets are sophomore WR Mack Hollins and sophomore Ryan Switzer, who have combined for over 470 yards receiving and 4 touchdowns. The Tar Heels won’t be able to fix their defensive problems over night so they better be prepared to score a ton of points moving forward if they hope to win some games.
Virginia Tech has won three of the last four meetings with North Carolina, including a 10-point win at home last year. The Hokies are the better team in this matchup but it’s hard to know which Virginia Tech team will show up because they have been so inconsistent. The one thing that is clear is North Carolina will allow as many points as Virginia Tech would like to score because their defense is terrible. Virginia Tech’s defense has been good but not great this season and North Carolina should be able to score as well. I think Virginia Tech will win a high scoring game.
