The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders play host to the dangerous Alabama-Birmingham Blazers in week eight.
The Alabama-Birmingham Blazers have been finding the endzone with regularity and that trend continued in a 56-21 rout of North Texas on the road. The Blazers have struggled defensively through the years but have a little bite in 2014 and they bit North Texas by recovering three fumbles with one returned for a touchchdown while recording a pair of pick six's. Even though the Blazers received plenty of help from the defensive side of the football it wasn't needed because quarterback Cody Clements connected on 17-22 for 316 yards with 12 yard and 74 yard touchdowns to Jordan Howard and Jamarcus Nelson. Howard led the Blazers on the ground with 67 yards and a score while DJ Vinson added 47 yards and a trip to the endzone but Alabama-Birmingham did not do much damage on the ground.

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders had a chance to extend their winning streak to three games but their problem was conference giant Marshall was on the other sideline. The Thundering Herd proved to be too much to handle on both sides of the ball in a 49-24 decision that dropped the Blue Raiders to 4-3. The Thundering Herd offense proved to be too much with 589 yards and 28 first downs and the defense wasn't too shabby by limiting the Blue Raiders to 370 yards and this is a team that can move the ball. Austin Grammer did have success through the air by hitting on 25-37 throws and a pair of touchdowns along with an interception but getting the ball downfield didn't happen. Jordan Parker looed the Blue Raiders on the groiund with 100 yards on 14 carries but nobody else was able to step up and produce.
The Over is 7-0 in the Blazers last seven conference games and is 4-0 in the last four after scoring more then 40 points. The over is 4-0 in the Blue Raiders last four home contests and is 5-0-1 in the last six on fieldturf and 5-0-1 in the past six conference games. Middle Tennessee State won this match up 24-21 in 2013 and is 4-3 ATS while Alabama-Birmingham is 4-2 versus the number.
While Marshall gets most of the publicity in the CUSA the Blazers and Blue Raiders might be flying under the radar a bit. I thihink the respective offenses are about on par with one another here but I give a slight edge to the Alabama-Birmingham defense which has me looking their way...
