The Blue Raiders led this 31-12 at one point but the improved Golden Eagles staged a late comeback to make the score more competitive then what the game was. Defense or lack of was the issue for both squads as MTSU piled up 583 yards with the ability to both run and throw effectively while Southern Miss was completely reliant on the air attack. George Payne totaled 89 yards and a touchdown but it took him 24 carries. The North Texas Mean Green lost a fair share of talent from last season and it's shown in a 2-4 record following a 56-21 rout at the hands of Alabama-Birmingham. The Mean Green are struggling to find the endzone and keep opponents off the scoreboard and could do neither against the Blazers. Both teams finished with around 450 yards but three lost fumbles ans a pair of interceptions absolutely killed the Mean Green with one fumble returned for a touchdown while both INT's were pick six's. Antoinne Jimmerson gave UNT 113 rushing yards and a touchdown with Dajon Williams and Andrew McNulty combined for 291 passing yards and a touchdown each with Williams throwing the picks. North Texas moved the ball at times but trailed 35-14 at the half and the Alabama-Birmingham defense was laying back a bit.
Southern Miss is 2-11 ATS versus a team with a losing record while the over is 4-0 in the last four conference games and is 6-1 in the last seven following a SU win. The over is 5-0 in the Mean Green's last five contests on fieldturf and 5-0in the past five overall while also going 4-0 in the last four following an ATS defeat. North Texas won this match up 55-14 in 2013.
North Texas is obviously not the same team we saw the past few seasons simply because of losing too much talent. Southern Mississippi has certainly looked better then they have in recent seasons but I believe the talent gap is still large enough for North Texas to get the win and cover at home...
