The Line: East Carolina Pirates -27.5 -- Over/Under: 54.5 See the Latest Odds
The UConn Huskies and East Carolina Pirates square off Thursday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The UConn Huskies have lost four straight games and have shown little sign of turning things around with a horrible defense. UConn relies heavily on its defense to keep things close, as the Huskies are allowing 25.7 points, 325 yards, and they’ve forced five turnovers and seven sacks. UConn has won six of its last 10 games SU when holding a team to 24 or less points. Marquise Vann leads UConn with 56 tackles and Graham Stewart has 4.5 tackles for loss. Offensively, Chandler Whitmer is completing only 55.5 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and three interceptions. Whitmer has thrown at least one touchdown in four of his last five games but an offensive line that’s allowed 24 sacks doesn’t give him much time. Geremy Davis is UConn’s best receiver, and he’s caught 33 passes for 431 yards and three touchdowns. Davis and Deshon Foxx are the only two UConn players with double-digit catches. UConn’s ground game averages just 2.2 yards per carry and has just one rushing touchdown, which belongs to Joshua Marriner.

The East Carolina Pirates have won four straight and look to be running away with the American Athletic Conference. East Carolina has a potent offense led by Shane Carden, who is completing 65.9 percent of his passes for 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. East Carolina has 19 passing plays of 25 or more yards, and the Pirates are 17-0 SU in the regular season when Carden throws at least two touchdowns. Justin Hardy and Isaiah Jones have combined for 89 receptions, more than 1,000 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Trevon Brown is the third East Carolina player with at least four receiving touchdowns. Breon Allen leads an East Carolina ground game that averages 6.1 yards per carry, and he’s rushed for four scores. Defensively, the East Carolina Pirates are allowing 23.8 points, 363.8 yards, and they’ve forced seven turnovers and 10 sacks. Zeek Bigger leads East Carolina with 70 tackles and Montese Overton has 5.5 tackles for loss.
The Huskies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games and 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 road games. The Pirates are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
I don't love this game at all, but if forced to pick I'd side with the UConn Huskies and the truckload of points. UConn can hold its own defensively when its not on the field all game and I like that the Huskies have had an extra week to prepare. East Carolina could still win this game easily, but four touchdowns is a lot of points to pass up on a Thursday night.
