The Florida State Seminoles and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets travel to Charlotte, NC to play in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday night.
The Florida State Seminoles are a perfect 12-0, 8-0 ACC after beating the Florida Gators 24-19 last weekend. The Seminoles have quality wins over Clemson, Notre Dame, Louisville, Miami, and now Florida this season. Florida State has not looked as dominate as last year’s championship squad, but they have a knack for finding ways to win games this year, even if it isn’t pretty. The Florida State defense is allowing an average of 22 points per game, which ranks 27th in the country this season. The Seminoles have allowed 31, 41, 20, 31, and 26 points in their road games this season. The Seminoles offense ranks 31st in points scored this season, averaging 34.6 points per game. QB Jameis Winston has completed 65% of his passes for 3,250 yards with 21 touchdowns and a whopping 17 interceptions this season. Winston has also rushed for 3 touchdowns for Florida State. WR Rashad Greene has played outstanding this season, hauling in 86 balls for 1,183 yards and 5 touchdowns. TE Nick O’Leary has 44 catches for 517 yards and 5 touchdowns. RB Dalvin Cook has a team-high 728 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns this season. RB Karlos Williams has 10 rushing touchdowns but has had limited action over the past month. The Seminoles have struggled in the first half of every road game they have had this season. Florida State beat Duke in the ACC Championship Game last season.
USA TODAY Sports
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets improved to 10-2, 6-2 ACC after beating Georgia in overtime 30-24 last weekend. The Yellow Jackets have won five straight games against Pittsburgh, Virginia, NC State, Clemson, and now Georgia. Georgia Tech’s two losses came on back to back weeks in mid-October against Duke and North Carolina by a combined 11 points. The Yellow Jackets defense is allowing an average of 24.1 points per game. Georgia Tech’s offense is averaging 37.2 points per game, which ranks 17th in the country. The triple option rushing attack has earned the Yellow Jackets the 4th best rushing game in the country, averaging over 333 yards per game. QB Justin Thomas has rushed for a team high 861 yards and 5 touchdowns. Thomas has only thrown for 1,460 yards but has 16 touchdown passes and only 4 interceptions. RB Zach Laskey has rushed for 748 yards and 8 touchdowns, while RB Synjyn Days has rushed for 686 yards and 3 touchdowns. WR DeAndre Smelter has a team-high 35 receptions for 715 yards and 7 touchdowns. This is a roster filled with a ton of juniors and seniors, so experience is definitely a big strength with this team. The Yellow Jackets are 5-1 on the road this season and have blown out some of their opponents in those games.
Florida State won the last meeting with Georgia Tech in 2012, 21-15. This is a bad matchup for the Seminoles and the Yellow Jackets will have a great chance of winning this game. Florida State will have had only a week to prepare for the Yellow Jackets triple-action attack, which so many teams have had trouble with this season. The Seminoles may not have RB Karlos Williams for this game either, which may not hurt much with Cook in the backfield, but it doesn’t help their depth. The Yellow Jackets are an experienced bunch that will not fear the Seminoles. I believe Georgia Tech will keep this game within a field goal or straight up win this game and knock of the defending champs, ending Florida State’s 28 game winning streak in the process.
