The Alcorn State Braves go on the road to face the option attack of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in week one.
The Alcorn State Braves went 10-3 in 2014 and won the SWAC behind the second ranked offense in the country that averaged 44 points and a stingy defense that gave up less then 20 points. Quarterback John Gibbs threw for nearly 2,500 yards and ran for another 1,000 yards and has a full compliment of receivers back in the fold. Jordan Payne, Jarvis Turner and Jaborian McKenzie lead the receiving corps although the Braves are more productive on the ground with Darryan Ragsdale and Arron Baker combining for over 2,400 yards with a veteran offensive line to run behind in 2015. The Braves defense was tough to run on but susceptible to the pass but some pieces are gone so the run ‘D’ might not be as stout and the secondary probably will be no stronger.

Paul Johnson has been highly successful at Georgia Tech and it all begins with their bruising option attack. The Yellow Jackets went 11-3 a year ago and won the Orange Bowl. Quarterback Justin Thomas threw for over 1,700 yards and was the top runner with 1,143 yards. The next four running backs are gone with Stanford transfer Patrick Skov and Broderick Snoddy likely starters with numerous three star athletes getting a look so the Yellow Jackets will have productive pieces in the backfield. The receiving corps lost eight of their top nine with Michael Summers and his seven catches the most experienced player back but again there are plenty of high ranked recruits to step in and with a veteran line doing the blocking the Jackets won’t miss a beat.
The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games on grass while going 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall. Alcorn State has an offense that can both run and throw while being solid against the run which we all know is Georgia Tech’s strength. The Braves won’t stop the Jackets option but perhaps they can score enough to stay within shouting distance which is the best they can hope for because an upset is not in the making…
