The Stony Brook Seawolves will travel to the Glass Bowl to take on the Toledo Rockets this Thursday night.
The Stony Brook Seawolves might have finished the season with just a 5-7 record (4-4 conference) in the Colonial last year but was a very competitive team that played some of the better FCS teams (UNH Wildcats & JMU) tough last year. The Seawolves are led by head coach Chuck Priore and a solid, hardnosed defense that allowed only 15.3 ppg last season. Stony Brook is returning 17 starters from last year’s squad however, lost a few key members on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball including CB Davonte Anderson. The good news for the Seawolves is that they have a solid RB in Stacey Bedell who average more than 5 yards per carry last season and QB Conor Bednarski (1,237 yds, 9 TD). The defensive is pretty young this season but still have one of the better DT’s in the conference in Victor Ochi who recorded 11 sacks last year. It will be interesting to see if the Seawolves defense can come anywhere close to repeating its dominant 2014 season, but if the young talent can develop quickly, Stony Brook can once again be a thorn in the side of some of the better CAA teams.
USA TODAY Sports
The Toledo Rockets finished last season with a 9-4 record (7-1 conference) and won a 63-44 shootout at the GoDaddy Bowl against Arkansas State. The Rockets will certainly be one of the favorites in the MAC this year as they have one of the best running backs in the MAC in junior Kareem Hunt. Hunt finished the 2014 season with 1631 yds, 16 TD, and 8.0 ypc and has gained at least 100 yards in 17 of the 22 games he has played in his career. Toledo has a talented WR duo in Corey Jones (842 yds, 5 TD) and Alonzo Russell (770 yds, 8 TD) but do have some questions at the QB position and will be most likely relying on senior Phillip Ely (541 yds, 4 TD) who was the starter last year for the first two games until missing the rest of his season due to a torn ACL. Toledo ranked 4th in the MAC last year giving up 23.5 ppg and 365 yds/game and probably the strongest DL in the MAC in 2015 led by DE Trent Voss and DT Orion Jones.
The Seawolves are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Rockers are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Thursday games.
The Toledo Rockets were able to easily handle one of the better FCS teams to kick off their season when they defeated the UNH Wildcats 52-16 and although Stony Book had one of the better defensives last year, they haven’t faced an offensive that can score points like the Rockets can. Stony Brook will be fine in FCS play this year but their no match against the Rockets on the road and I see Toledo winning this one by at least 4 TD’s.
Update (9/3/15) - This line has moved down to -23 and still love Toledo in this spot.
