FBS newcomer the Charlotte 49ers open the season at the Georgia Dome to face the Georgia State Panthers.
The offensive minded Charlotte 49ers begin life in the FBS as a member of the Sun Belt. The 49ers were just 5-6 in 2014 and are hoping quarterback Matt Johnson can avoid the injury bug and play a whole season. Johnson threw for over 1,900 yards and was the 49ers second leading rusher with just over 400 yards so the team can’t afford to be without him with the step up in competition. Austin Duke is the gem of the Charlotte receiving unit after snagging 79 balls for nearly 1,400 yards with Trent Bostick the second option with 33 receptions. Kalif Phillips was the workhorse on the ground for the 49ers with 229 carries for over 1,400 yards and he has a veteran offensive line blocking for him.
USA TODAY Sports
The Georgia State Panthers were a highly effective passing team but were not very balanced with the rushing attack being something of an afterthought. GSU leaned on quarterback Nick Arbuckle and were rewarded with nearly 3,400 yards on over 60% although he was mistake prone with 17 interceptions. The Panthers receiving corps are stocked with the three top options returning in Donovan Harden, Robert Davis and Joel Ruiz so there is no reason this group can not do even more damage. Georgia State was not much of a factor on the ground with top runner Marcus Caffey totaling 350+ yards although he is rumored to be heading to the defense.
The over is 6-0 in Panthers last 6 home games while the Panthers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games and are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games. The numbers say Georgia State will move the ball through the air so I’m inclined to take the Panthers TT over but I’m not sure what Charlotte does so for now…
