TV: PAC 12

The Weber State Wildcats will travel to Reser Stadium to take on the Oregon State Beavers in College Football action this Friday night.

The Weber State Wildcats played a few of the better teams in the Big Sky tough last season but had trouble finding wins as they finished the season with a 2-10 record (2-6 Big Sky). Weber State averaged 21.8 ppg last season and had a decent offensive attack that averaged 385.1 yds/game last season. Head Coach Jay Hill will have something to work with on the offensive end as QB and former BYU transfer, Billy Green (2,055 yds, 11 TDs) will be back however, the Wildcats will need to find some new targets for him to throw to as their top two receivers Shaydon Kehano and Cam Livingston. Weber State will also be returning their top rusher in Zach Smith who gained 742 yds last season with 3 TD. Weber State will need to improve on a defense that allowed 30.7 ppg last season including letting opposing RB’s to average 4.8 yds/carry against them. The Wildcats had trouble getting turnovers last season as they finished the season with a -10 turnover margin. Coach Hill will be relying on LB Emmett Tela and DT Jake Gallegos to help led the way for the Wildcat defense this season.

The Oregon State Beavers finished last season with a 5-7 record (2-7 PAC-12) however, got a huge surprise in the off season when after HC Mike Riley left for Nebraska, they were able to get a talented HC in Wisconsin’s Gary Anderson. Anderson will have his work cut out for him in his first season as although the Beavers averaged a solid 25.7 ppg last season, they have three freshman battling for the QB job with Seth Collins looking like the one that will win the job to start the season. Returning for the Beavers this season will be RB Storm Woods (766 yds, 5 TD, 6.3 yds/carry), WR Victor Bolden (72 rec, 798 yds, 2 TD) and a decent offensive line led by Isaac Seumalo. On the defensive side ball the Beavers allowed opponents to average 31.6 ppg last year and things don’t look as if they are going to get much better in 2015. Outside of CB Larry Scott, the Beavers are still pretty young at the LB and DB positions and looks like it will be at least a year or two until coach Anderson can make the Beavers relevant in the PAC-12 North.

The Wildcats are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games on field turf and the Over is 5-0 in the Wildcats last 5 games in September. The Beavers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.

Although this will be a rebuilding year for Coach Anderson and the Beavers as he implements a whole new system this is still a Pac-12 team vs. a weaker FCS team and I imagine the line will be large. I think the better play in this one is in the over/under as both defensives are weak and as Weber State has most of its talent on the offensive end and coach Anderson like to run more of a spread offensive, I think as long as the Over/Under isn’t huge, Over is the play here.
