The Rhode Island Rams will travel to the Carrier Dome to take on the Syracuse Orangeman this Friday night in college football action.
The Rhode Island Rams once against had a season to forget in 2014 finishing the season with a 1-11 (1-7 Colonial) record last season. The Rams had issues everywhere however, they really struggled on the offensive side of the ball as they averaged just 12.5 ppg last season. Second year head coach Jim Fleming is in the middle of a major rebuilding process with the Rams and although they are returning 18 starters from last year’s team, it’s most likely going to be another long season for the Rams. Leading the way offensively for Rhode Island will be QC James Caparell (46.3%, 745 yds, 3 TD, 9 INT) and Harold Cooper (417 yds, 4.6 yds/carry). The offensive will be looking to improve from averaging just 266.5 ypg. On the defensive end, the Rams struggled last season allowing 34.1 ppg and 442.6 yds/game. The rushing defensive really struggled allowing opponents to rush for 231.1 yds/game and lost their leading tackler from last season in LB Andrew Bose.

The Syracuse Orange suffered through an injury plagued 2014 season and finished the season with a 3-9 record (1-7 ACC). Syracuse lost their most important player on offensive last year in QB Terrel Hunt early last season and to make matters worse lost one of their better receivers in Brisly Estime and one of their better playmakers in Ashton Broyld. With all the injuries, Syracuse was only able to average just 12.9 ppg in conference play which included just 167 passing yds/game. The offensive should be able to get a boost by having Hunt back this season, however the Orange still lose their top two rushers from last year’s squad and still don’t have a huge amount of talent on the offensive end. On the defensive side of the ball, the Orange were decent allowing only 24.33 ppg last season, but it could be difficult for the Orange to have similar success this season as they lost 8 starts for last year’s defense. Syracuse will be relying on LB Marqez Hodge and DE Ron Thompson to lead a young defense.
The Rams are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Orange are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games.
Both Rhode Island and Syracuse are in for long seasons as the Rams are currently rebuilding and predicted to come in last in the Colonial conference of the FCS and the Orange will have difficulty finding wins as they will have to play Florida State and Louisville on the road and Clemson and LSU at home. Although the Orange will struggle this season this should be an easy win for them at home. This game isn’t lined as of yet, and although I’m probably staying away from it as I imagine the number will be large, I would lean towards the Orange in this one.
