The Sam Houston State Bearkats kick off their 2015 campaign with the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The Sam Houston State Bearkats are one of the top squads in the nation and have torn up the Southland with conference titles in three of the last four years. The Bearkats are loaded once again with 19 starters returning from a team that went 11-5 and lost to eventual FCS champion North Dakota State in the playoffs. The Bearkats outscored opponents 33-28 overall and should be able to light up the scoreboard once again. Dual threat quarterback Jared Johnson is a 3,000 yard passer and 1,000 yard runner with Keshawn Hill (195-1200) and Jalen Overstreet (106-764) giving the ground attack plenty of punch behind a veteran offensive line. Ladarius Brown was the top target in the air with 807 yards on 45 catches and almost 18 yard average while Yedidiah Louis snagged 71 balls for 803 yards.

Goal number one for the Texas Tech Red Raiders will be to squeeze more from a defense that was run on and allowed 41 points but has a vast majority of this unit returning which could be good or bad depending on whether you value experience. Regardless of the shortcomings on defense the Red Raiders will make things interesting with their offense returning many of the pieces that averaged nearly 31 points. Who gets the starting job at QB might change with Davis Webb throwing for over 2,500 yards but with more mistakes then Patrick Mahomes who tossed for over 1,500 in place of the injured Davis. Jakeem Grant (67-938) leads a loaded receiving corps with 1,100 yard runner DeAndre Washington back to carry the rushing attack.
Very interesting match up with the very potent rushing attack of Sam Houston State going against a Texas Tech ‘D’ that was run on in 2014. The Bearkats were crushed by LSU a season ago in what was simply a bad match up but this is more favorable in my view. The Red Raiders will score because the Bearkats aren’t a great defense but I’m inclined to take the points with the belief that SHSU can score enough to stay within the number although the line is moving in favor of Texas Tech. Perhaps the over might be doable when released…
