The Akron Zips look to even their record when the Pittsburgh Panthers pay a visit on Saturday.
The Pittsburgh Panthers outlasted Bo Pellini and Youngstown State 45-37 to kick off the season at 1-0.The pesky Penguins just wouldn’t go away as two touchdown underdogs but the Pitt ground game finally won out. Chad Voytik only threw for 72 yards with a pick six but 55 yards came on a touchdown toss to Scott Orndoff as Pittsburgh did not have a player catch more then two balls. The ground was where the Panthers made their living with Oadree Ollison amassed 207 yards on 16 totes including a 72 yard scoring burst while James Conner added 77 yards and a pair of TD’s on eight touches. The Pitt special teams also got in to the scoring column on an 89 yard kick return by Avonte Maddox.

The Akron Zips drew a tough opener to the season with a trip to Oklahoma and the final score of 41-3 says as much with the Sooners being able to move the ball with the visitors not doing much offensively. The numbers tell the story with the Sooners totaling 539 yards and 26 first downs while Akron was held to 226 yards with a lost fumble and nine penalties. The Zips really needed to milk the clock and shorten the game with a decent rushing attack but instead averaged just over three yards with Conor Hundley and Thomas Woodson combining for 66 on eight carries. The Akron passing attack struggled with Kyle Pohl throwing for 88 yards on 6-17 with Jerome Lane snagging three balls for 57 yards.
I think most people expected Pittsburgh to walk all over Youngstown State but this wasn’t a bad Penguins squad and the game was competitive so in the scope of things this wasn’t a bad performance. Akron had no shot at beating Oklahoma on the road but I still thing the performance was subpar. I think Bowden might be starting to feel some heat if the Zips lay an egg here at home but I don’t feel good about either side to be honest…
