The Minnesota Golden Gophers look for their first win when they face the Colorado State Rams in week two.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers gave mighty Texas Christian all they could handle before fall to the Horned Frogs by a 23-17 count as a two touchdown home underdog. TCU did move the ball with 449 yards but were held out of the end zone enough to make Minnesota’s 341 yards competitive enough. The bottom line for the Golden Gophers is neither the run or pass was strong enough to get the job done with 341 yards and a pair of lost fumbles. Mitch Leidner gave the Golden Gophers 197 yards and a touchdown through the air but was only 19-35. Rodney Smith was the Golden Gophers rushing attack with 88 yards on 16 carries with a one yard scoring plunge while KJ Maye led the receiving corps with four catches for 73 yards including a 22 yard score with 1:32 left to play.

The Colorado State Rams were never challenged in a 65-13 rout of FCS Savannah State that probably been worse. This was 45-7 at the half and the only question was how bad it would get. CSU dominated both sides of the ball with a 598-183 yardage advantage including a 33-11 edge in first downs. The Rams saw Nick Stevens throw for 289 yards and five touchdowns on a 20-28 effort while Coleman Key was 7-8 for 92 yards and another score. Five receivers recorded touchdowns with eleven catching passes for the Rams while the rushing attack was not to be forgotten with 217 yards and over 6 ½ yard average. Jasen Oden led the Rams backfield with 74 yards with Izzy Matthews adding a 37 yard scoring run with two seconds left.
It’s tough to say how Colorado State is based on their performance against Savannah State because that was an obvious mismatch although I believe the Rams are pretty good. I was impressed by the Golden Gophers who played the very good Horned Frogs extremely tough. I’m looking at Minnesota for now and will update if there is a change of heart…
