Mistakes cost the Rice Owls dearly in a 42-28 road loss to the Texas Longhorns. The Owls defense certainly held their own with just 277 yards allowed but a fumble return and a punt return resulted in a 14 point swing while five turnovers were devastating and negated 44 minutes of possession. The Owls totaled 462 yards which turned out to be meaningless with the mistakes. Driphus Jackson gave the Owls 139 passing yards with a score and a pair of picks while Tyler Stehling threw for 95 yards and an interception while Dennis Parks paced the receivers with 77 yards on eight catches. Rice was effective on the ground behind 123 yards and two scores from Samuel Stewart with Darik Dillard adding 53 yards.

The North Texas Mean Green suffered through a second half meltdown in a 31-13 road loss to Southern Methodist. The Mustangs won the second half 24-7 to break open a 7-6 contest at the half. SMU had big advantages in the boxscore with a 444-240 edge in yards which made their three turnovers more tolerable and the Mean Green’s three giveaways killers. UNT had a short passing attack with Andrew McNulty going 16-34 for 128 yards and a pair of picks with Turner Smiley catching three balls for 42 yards while Carlos Harris caught five passes for 40 yards. Andrew Tucker and Antoinne Jmmerson combined for 90 yards on 19 carries but North Texas struggled to move the chains.

I hate road chalk but Rice did not play all that poorly against Texas…
