The Northwestern Wildcats host the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Ryan Field Saturday.
After dropping their season opener to Texas Christian the Minnesota Golden Gophers have won three straight games by a field goal. The Golden Gophers defeated Ohio 27-24 in week four with a touchdown with just 30 seconds remaining to end a back and forth struggle. Minnesota won the yardage battle 468-345 but fumbled six times and somehow lost only one. Mitch Leidner gave the Golden Gophers solid production in the air with a 22-31 effort for 264 yards with KJ Maye and RB Rodney Smith combining for nine catches and 122 yards. Smith led the Minnesota rushing attack with 94 yards on 16 carries while Shannon Brooks followed with 82 yards on ten totes with two TD’s including the game winner.

The Northwestern Wildcats might be the surprise team of the year so far with a win versus Stanford an a 4-0 record after downing visiting Ball State 24-19 in week four. On paper the Wildcats dominated with a 546-359 edge in yards but this advantage was partially negated by three turnovers. Clayton Thorson paced a balanced Northwestern attack with 256 passing yards and three touchdowns and an interception with Dan Vitale hauling in five balls for 108 yards and a pair of scores. Thorson also ran for another 45 yards but Justin Jackson was the Wildcats monster on the ground with 184 yards on 33 carries.
