The Fighting Illini of Illinois travel to Kinnick Stadium to oppose the Iowa Hawkeyes
The Illinois Fighting Illini have enjoyed a surprisingly good start and my guess is the naysayers are probably waiting for them to stumble. They are still waiting as the Illini upended Nebraska 14-13 in week five behind a late scoring burst with 14 points in the 4th. The Illinois defense held the Cornhuskers to just 292 yards while forcing a pair of turnovers while the offense produced 382 yards and was mistake free. Quarterback Wes Lunt did have some difficulty connecting with his receivers with a 23-45 effort for 251 yards and a pair of touchdowns with Geronimo Allison leading Illinois with eight receptions for 91 yards and a score. Ke’Shawn Vaughn paced Illinois on the ground with 98 yards on 24 carries while Josh Ferguson added 50 yards on four totes.

The Iowa Hawkeyes don’t have a prolific scoring offense but when the topic is defense this team is rock solid. That defense played a pivotal role in a 10-6 win at Wisconsin to up their record to 5-0. The Badgers led 320-221 in yardage but turned the ball over four times and forced two. Quarterback CJ Beathard struggled with 77 yards on 9-21 with a touchdown and interception with Matt VandeBerg hauling in six balls for 61 to pace the Hawkeyes receivers. The Hawkeyes received a strong performance on the ground from Jordan Canzeri who totaled 125 yards on 126 yards but this game was won with defense with the Badgers managing just two field goals.
The under is 5-0 in Fighting Illini last 5 vs. a team with a winning record and is 4-0 in Fighting Illini last 4 games overall while going 4-0 in Fighting Illini last 4 games following a S.U. win. The over is 3-0-2 in Hawkeyes last 5 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game and is 5-1-2 in Hawkeyes last 8 games following a S.U. win while going 5-1-2 in Hawkeyes last 8 games following a ATS win. The under is 5-0-1 in the last 6 meetings and the home team is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 meetings. Ferguson is banged up so I’ll go with the Iowa defense here…
