The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the South Florida Bulls face off on Monday afternoon in the Miami Beach Bowl as college football bowl season continues.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers finished the season at 11-2 after blowing out Southern Miss in the conference championship game. Both of Western Kentucky’s losses were to bowl teams losing early at Indiana and later falling to LSU. The WKU offense is averaging 44.2 points and 519.8 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 15 times. Hilltopper QB Brandon Doughty has completed 71.8 percent of his passes with 45 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Western Kentucky has had an opportunistic defense and an offense that can finish drives and it has led to a big season.

The South Florida Bulls flew under the radar this season going 8-4 and winning seven of their last eight games. South Florida got off to a rough start to the year and it looked like all was lost but they turned it around and were as good as anyone in the final months of the season. The USF offense is averaging 33.5 points and 428.7 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 15 times. Bulls QB Quinton Flowers has completed 61.1 percent of his passes with 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions and he has rushed for 883 yards and 10 touchdowns. Marlon Mack is South Florida’s top rusher with 1,273 yards and eight touchdowns and Rodney Adams is their top receiver with 39 catches and 8 touchdowns. The USF defense is allowing 21.1 points and 361.2 yards per game with 15 interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, and 32 sacks. Auggie Sanchez leads he Bulls with 106 tackles, Jamie Byrd has 80 tackles and 5.0 sacks, and Nate Godwin and Deatri Nichols each have 58 tackles. South Florida plays a physical style of play and it has served them well as they have one of the bigger surprises it he second half of the season.
Western Kentucky is 4-1 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread, 1-4 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, and 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five games. South Florida is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games, 4-1-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 7-1 against the spread following a win.
The total is set at 66.5 and rising but I don’t see it getting that high unless one team runs away with it but that is unlikely as well.
