The Line: East Shrine PK -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The West Team and East Team meet Saturday afternoon in the West - East Shrine Game at Tropicana Field.
The West Team will be led by head coach June Jones, who recently coached SMU for two seasons and became offensive coordinator of Kapolei High School this month. Quarterback wise, the West Team will include (Oregon) Vernon Adams Jr., (Indiana) Nathan Sudfeld and (Western Kentucky) Brandon Doughty. Other offensive playmakers for the West will include Purdue wide receiver Danny Anthrop, Oregon State running back Storm Woods and Colorado State tight end Kivon Cartwright. Defensively, the West Team has a solid mixture of hard hitters including RJ Williamson of Michigan State, Gerald Dixon Jr. of South Carolina and Antonio Longino of Arizona State. The West has lost the Shrine Game in five of the last seven meetings.

The East Team will be led by former offensive and head coach Charlie Weis, who has been around the block in college football. Quarterback wise, the East Team features (Massachusetts-Amherst) Blake Frohnapfel, (Michigan) Jake Rudock and (Wisconsin) Joel Stave. The East Team’s playmakers include wide receiver Rashawn Scott out of Miami, running back Devon Johnson of Marshall and Keenan Reynolds out of Navy. Defensively, the East Team has some physical players in Penn State’s Anthony Zettel, Notre Dame’s Romeo Okwara and South Florida’s Jamie Byrd. The East has won 10 of the last 19 Shrine Games.
It’s always tough to predict all star games and how things will turn out, especially this one considering players are simply using this as another chance to impress scouts and move up on draft boards. The result of the game doesn’t matter in their eyes.
However, Team East has the better coach and simply more speed/talent across the board. This is also the first time Reynolds will be featured as a running back, so you know the ball will be in the former Navy quarterback’s hands a lot.
I like East to win this game.
