Troy Trojans 2016 Preview
Second year HC Neal Brown has the Troy Trojans pointed towards the postseason in 2016.
Overview: Neal Brown had the Trojans looking really good or really bad a year ago so job number one is ironing out the highs and lows and developing a team that is more even keel from Saturday to Saturday.
USA TODAY Sports
Offense: Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers reflected the up and down nature of this team but the overall body of work was actually good with 2,378 passing yards on 61.2% with 20 scores and seven picks. Teddy Ruben takes 879 receiving yards to graduation so Troy will look to John Johnson and Emanuel Thompson and their combined 557 yards on 51 catches as the top receivers back with several JUCO’s making some noise in the spring. The Trojans ground game features the return of Jordan Chunn from a broken collarbone and six from the O-Line with starting experience although All Sun Belt center Dalton Bennett graduated.
Defense: Troy was able to get after the quarterback in 2015 but end Tyler Roberts is gone along with 17 TFL and seven sacks although Jamal Stadom, Rashad Dillard and Seth Galloway combined for 19 TFL and 11.5 sacks with six players seeing action in at least ten games coming back. Demetrius Cain and William Lloyd are set at linebacker although MLB Terris Lewis might see the bulk of his time rushing the passer in an attempt to help Troy replace the production of Roberts. Seven are back in the secondary including Auburn transfer Kamryn Melton at corner but this unit is a wait and see group depending on the pass rush help generated by the guys up front.
Special Teams: Punter Ryan Kay will have placekicker added to his job description with his decent leg but return duties are the Trojans main concern with no Teddy Ruben.
Outlook: If you look at Troy in 2015 you see they struggled to win close games and were inconsistent. Fast forward to this year and a more dependable Silvers, (consistent) along with a creditable pass rush and it’s not hard to see Troy being Bowl eligible.
