San Diego State Aztecs 2016 Preview
The 2016 San Diego State Aztecs are one of the frontrunners in a top heavy Mountain West Conference.
Overview: Rocky Long took the Aztecs a long way a season ago with a MWC title and eleven wins. SDSU looks to repeat that success and head to their 7th consecutive Bowl.

Offense: The run heavy Aztecs will obviously keep churning out the rushing yards but if quarterback Christian Chapman develops in to a dependable passer this offense will be hard to deal with. The actual concern for the San Diego State passing game is finding receivers with Micah Holder tops among wide receivers with 24 catches while RB Donnel Pumphrey led the team with 28 receptions. Of course Pumphrey is known for his ability to run the ball with 1,653 yards on 309 carries in 2015 while Rashaad Penny averaged six yards per touch in limited opportunities. The SDSU O-Line gets three starters back and the Aztecs obviously have abundant size.
Defense: The Aztecs gave up just 16 points and were effective against the pass and the run but lose two of their top three linemen although DT Alex Barrett with his 13 TFL and 5.5 sacks are back as well a many of their two deep rotation. The San Diego State linebacking unit returns almost everyone with Calvin Munson recording 15 TFL, 9.5 sacks and a pair of interceptions. The Aztecs secondary is loaded with corner Damontae Kazee leading the way with 5.5 TFL and an incredible eight interceptions while safety Malik Smith logged five picks.
Special Teams: Punter Tanner Blain returns but John Baron II takes over as placekicker for the departed Donny Hageman. Kick returner Rashaad Penny is a touchdown waiting to happen with three scores in 2015.
Outlook: San Diego State is loaded and nobody should be surprised by another Mountain West title with all of last season’s numbers achievable.
