Utah State Aggies 2016 Preview

See the Latest Odds

The Utah State Aggies hope to avoid the injury bug and make a run at the MWC title in 2016.

Overview: Matt Wells and his Utah State Aggies have been hurt by injuries the last few seasons but continued to win. The post Chuckie Keeton era begins and the Aggies are still expected to go to another Bowl and make noise in the Mountain West.

Utah State Aggies 2016 College Football Preview, Schedule, Prediction, Depth Chart, Outlook

Offense: The Aggies might have another star in the making in quarterback Kent Myers who threw for almost 1,600 yards on 60.8% with 16 TD’s versus three picks. TE Wyatt Houston and WR Andrew Rodriguez are the top returning receiving options but the Aggies need someone who can stretch the field. USU should have no problem moving the chains on the ground with potential 1,000 yard back Devante Mays getting the bulk of the carries with LaJuan Hunt as the primary backup while Myers (72-448) averaged over six yards on the ground to make himself a dangerous dual threat. Three starters return along the offensive line with a 4th getting nine starts in 2015 so the ground game should have some punch.

Defense: Utah State has always been tough defensively but the front seven has been hit hard with the NFL calling and graduation. NG Travis Seefeldt missed all of 2015 because of injuries in a car accident so he and end Ricky Ali’ifua are the the guys the Aggies will build around on the line. The most glaring losses for the Aggies defense is at linebacker where the entire unit has been wiped clean with the top four combining nearly 250 tackles with Nick Vigil taking 106 tackles including 13.5 TFL to the NFL.  The USU secondary should be a strength with corner Jalen Davis defensing eight passes and recording three picks while FS Devin Centers also had three interceptions. The addition of BYU SS Dallin Leavitt will also help.

Special Teams: Punter Aaron Dalton was a weapon in his own right as over 75% of his 72 boots were not returned. Jake Thompson and Brock Warren are duking it out for kicker/placekicker but Kennedy Williams and Andrew Rodriguez are outstanding returners with the latter averaging nearly ten yards on 26 punt returns with a TD.

Outlook: With the losses on defense Utah State might be relying on their offense more then we’ve been accustomed to seeing. While I don’t see the Aggies winning the Mountain West I do believe another Bowl is in their grasp.
