Old Dominion Monarchs 2016 Preview
The Old Dominion Monarchs are hoping their experience results in their first Bowl invitation in 2016.
Overview: Bobby Wilder’s Monarchs were outscored 36-24 in 2015 and fared well in one possession games but were blasted against decent teams to finish 5-7 and barely miss out on Bowl eligibility.

Offense: Old Dominion went through spring practice without a clear cut starter at quarterback with Shuler Bentley and David Washington vying for the job although Washington is still recovering from injury. Whoever gets the job has plenty of receiving options with Zach Pascal and Jonathan Duhart giving ODU over 1,600 receiving yards while Blair Roberts and Melvin Vaughn are scheduled to return from injury. Ray Lawry led Old Dominion on the ground with over 1,100 yards while Jeremy Cox totaled 369 yards so the ground game is in good shape especially with an O-Line that returns six players with starting experience.
Defense: The Monarchs defensive line returns an eye popping 12 players led by Rashaad Coward, Bunmi Rotimi and Oshane Ximines and their combined 16 TFL and eleven sacks although the unit was not good at stopping the run. TJ Ricks paced the Monarchs at linebacker with 85 stops with 4.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks while defensing seven passes. ODU has promise in Isaiah Worthy and Marvin Branch who will both be sophomores. The Monarchs secondary returns eight with corners Aaron Young and Brandon Addison combining for 19 passes defensed. Now if the Monarchs run ‘D’ improves…
Special Teams: ODU needs to find a punter but placekicker Chris Kirtley was sound with 10-13 effort on field goals including 4-5 from 40+ yards. Zach Pascal will bring back kicks but the Monarchs need more on punt returns.
Outlook: If the Monarchs have a viable passing attack to help their ground game the offense should be better but at least controlling opposing runners on defense is a must to reach the postseason.
