South Florida Bulls 2016 Preview
Willie Taggart and the South Florida Bulls are eyeing the AAC crown in 2016.
Overview: Taggart and the Bulls need a few pieces on both lines but are otherwise loaded with top notch talent that has plenty of firepower on offense and plenty of stopping power on defense.
USA TODAY Sports
Offense: USF is set at quarterback with dual threat Quinton Flowers throwing for almost 2,300 yards while running for 1,077 yards and a hefty 6.2 yard average. Star back Marlon Mack returns with 1,381 yards from 2015 with Darius Tice and D’Ernest Johnson combining for 767 yards to give South Florida plenty of options on the ground. Rodney Adams led the Bulls receiving corps with 816 yards a season ago but five players caught between 200-346 yards with NC State transfer Marquez Valdes-Scantling coming in in 2016. USF gets back two starters on the O-line but there a numerous three star athletes that will get an opportunity.
Defense: The 4-2-5 alignment that South Florida employs lost four defensive lineman that accounted for over 30.5 TFL with DT Deadrin Senat bringing back 5.5 TFL while Kevin Bronson, Daniel Awoke and Bruce Hector showed some playmaking ability and the Bulls have several three star athletes coming in. USF is set at linebacker with Auggie Sanchez recording 94 stops and 8.5 TFL while Nigel Harris recorded 4.5 TFL with plenty of 3-4 star players waiting in the wings. The Bulls lost do everything Jamie Byrd in the secondary but everybody else is back with corner Deatrick Nichols making 8.5 TFL and defensing nine passes while Devin Abraham and corner Ronnie Hoggins broke up 14 passes.
Special Teams: Brent Gordon becomes the fulltime punter while Emilio Nadelman was 9-11 on sub 40 yard field goals but the Bulls need better then 6-12 on +40 attempts. D’Ernest Johnson, Rodney Adams and Tajee give South Florida a very good return game.
Outlook: On paper South Florida is loaded with talent and should be a major threat to win the American but as I always say, nothing is guaranteed until we see this team play.
