East Carolina Pirates 2016 Preview
East Carolina fired successful coach Ruffin McNeill and hired Scottie Montgomery who needs to find some pieces on offense to succeed in 2016.
Overview: Scottie Montgomery will need his defense to step up and lead the Pirates to keep the team competitive until the offense can gel and help the team head back to the postseason.

Offense: Former Minnesota and Rutgers quarterback Philip Nelson takes over under center while throwing for 1,300 yards on just over 50% in 2015 while the Pirates Zay Jones returns as the top receiving option with nearly 1,100 yards with Trevon Brown and Davon Grayson combining for over 900 yards. James Summers and Anthony Scott give East Carolina some punch on the ground along with Tennessee transfer Derrell Scott. The ECU offensive line returns two starters with another with starting experience (Christian Matau).
Defense: Kenwick Thompson takes over as the Pirates defensive coordinator and his first order of business is to put together a competitive D-Line. DE Fred Presley and tackle Demetri McGill are the two top players back for ECU with a combined 9.5 TFL. The Pirates lose two of their top three linebackers and their 16.5 TFL and nine sacks while Jordan Williams posted 6.5 TFL with Yiannis Bowden totaling 3.5 sacks and Joe Carter coming back from injury. The East Carolina secondary features Corey Seargent and DaShaun Amos and their eleven passes defensed while safety Travon Simmons broke up nine passes.
Special Teams: Worth Gregory and his 43 yard average per punt was outstanding while placekicker Davis Plowman gave the Pirates a solid kicking duo while Quay Johnson and Trevon Brown can both handle punt and kick returns.
Outlook: Montgomery was not left with a team in disarray but one with enough talent to go Bowling especially if the Pirates win some close ones.
