The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the South Carolina Gamecocks face off on Saturday in week 2 SEC college football action.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs were unable to escape the upset bug in week 1 as they lost to South Alabama 21-20. The MSU offense was effective for the most part gaining 382 yards and they didn’t turn the ball over but they were unable to find the endzone in the second half. Mississippi State QB Damien Williams looks like he will be another good one as he completed 71.4 percent of his passes and ran for 101 yards. Brandon Holloway appears to be the top option in the backfield for the Bulldogs carrying the ball 14 times for 49 yards and catching 5 passes while Ashton Shumpert had just three carries. Fred Ross is MSU’s top receiver and return man and he started the year with 6 receptions but he gained just 34 yards while Justin Johnson and Donald Gray were among those with two catches. The Mississippi State defense allowed 379 yards and failed to force a turnover but they just couldn’t come up with any key stops allowing USA to avoid bad field position most of the day. Leo Lewis was MSU’s top tackler with 9, J.T. Gray had 8 tackles, and A.J. Jefferson had 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Mississippi State will need to put last week’s disaster behind them in a hurry.

The South Carolina Gamecocks were able to rally for a win in their opener at Vanderbilt but this is a team with plenty of work to do to improve. The South Carolina offense gained 308 yards but lost two fumbles while running a two QB system. This week Perry Orth starts at QB for the Gamecocks after completing 57.9 percent of his passes for 152 yards last week. A.J. Turner anchors the South Carolina rushing attack with 70 yards and he also had 3 receptions and Bryan Edwards was the top receiver with 8 catches for 108 yards. Defensively South Carolina allowed just 242 yards and got one QB sack. Marquavious Lewis and Chaz Elder led the way for the Gamecocks defense with 7 tackles each while Jonathan Walton had six tackles. South Carolina got the win and at the end of the day that is the most important thing but they were less than impressive in doing so.
Mississippi State is 4-1 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the point spread, 7-2 against the spread following a loss, and 14-6 against the spread in their last 20 SEC games. South Carolina is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games, 4-1 against the spread in their last five SEC games, and 2-6 against the spread against a team with a losing record. South Carolina has covered the point spread in six of their last seven games against Mississippi State.
This should be a hard nosed SEC battle and I don’t expect a ton of scoring so my free pick here is under the total that has been set at 44.5. My stronger play is on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as at Sports Chat Experts.
