The South Alabama Jaguars look to stuff the option of the visiting Georgia Southern Eagles in week two action.
The South Alabama Jaguars have to be sky high after traveling to Mississippi State on opening day and beating the Bulldogs 21-20 as a 28 point underdog. The Bulldogs held a 17-0 lead entering the locker room but missed a short field goal in the closing seconds to seal the upset. At the final gun, both teams totaled around 380 yards of offense with MSU doing their damage on the ground and the Jaguars moving the chains in the air. Tyreis Thomas was the only South Alabama runner of note with 83 yards on ten touches with a four yard scoring run. Quarterback Dallas Davis was the Jaguars offensive star with 285 passing yards on 24-33 with a pair of touchdowns while Josh Magee and Gerald Everett paced the receiving crew with a combined 228 yards on 15 catches with a TD each.

To nobody’s surprise, the Georgia Southern Eagles cruised to a 54-0 rout over visiting Savannah State as a 55 point favorite and they could have won by much more. The boxscore tells the story and that was the Tigers could not move the chains and GSU did easily. The run first Eagles actually threw the ball a bit and were quite successful with quarterbacks Favian Upshaw and Kevin Ellison combining to complete 12-17 for 185 yard with two touchdowns and a pick. Montay Crockett led all receivers with three catches for 73 yards while five players gained over 50 yards on the ground with Demarcus Godfrey gaining a team high 124 yards followed by Wesley Fields with 87 yards.
I’d be lying if I said South Alabama had a shot of upsetting Mississippi State, especially with their big goose egg heading to the locker room. However, I did expect a big win from Georgia Southern against a very weak opponent. My thinking here is the Jaguars might be in for a letdown for obvious reasons and the Eagles bruising option might be a bit too much to deal with here…
