Louisiana Monroe fell behind early in this one and didn’t have really have a chance in the 2nd half after being down 42-0 at halftime. Louisiana Monroe was outgained by the Sooners by a 640-350 margin and was only 2-14 on 3rd down conversations. Leading the way for the Warhawks was QB Garrett Smith who completed 22 of 25 passes for 251 yards and 2 TD’s. The Georgia Southern Eagles improved to 2-0 (1-0 Sun Belt) on the season after defeating the Southern Alabama Jaguars, 24-9, this past Saturday. Georgia Southern had a slim 10-6 lead at halftime but outscored the Jaguars by a 14-3 margin in the 2nd half to get the victory. Georgia State outgained South Alabama by a 441-355 margin and was outstanding defending the rushing attack of the Jaguars as South Alabama averaged just 2.7 rushing yards/carry. Leading the way for Georgia southern was QB Favian Upshaw who had 108 rushing yards on 18 carries. On the season, Georgia Southern is averaging 39.0 ppg on 523.0 total yards per game (161.0 passing, 362.0 rushing). Georgia Southern was the top ranked rushing team in 2015 as they averaged 363.0 rushing yards a game and it looks like the Eagles offensive will continue to feature a strong rushing attack as they currently have 5 players who are averaging more than 60.0 yds/game. Leading the rushing attack has been QB Favian Upshaw (12.5 att/game, 80.50 yds/game, 2 TD), QB Kevin Ellison (11.0 att/game, 71.5 yds/game, 2 TD) and RB Wesley Fields (12.0 att/game, 66.50 yds/game, 2 TD). QB Favian Upshaw is completing 68.4% of his passes for 2 TD, 1 INT, and an average 121 passing yards/game. Montay Crockett has seen the most action at the WR position this season as he currently has 5 receptions and 115 yards over the first two games. Defensively, Georgia Southern is allowing their opponents to average just 4.5 ppg on 233.0 yards per game (179.5 passing, 53.5 rushing). The Eagles have a turnover margin of plus 1 and are led defensively by LB Ironhead Gallon (13 tackles).
The Warhawks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in September however, just 2-6 ATS in their last 8 conference games. The Eagles are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games in September and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 conference games.
Louisiana Monroe was one of the worst ranked football teams on both sides of the ball in 2015 and although they look like they have the potential to be able to put up a few more points on the board, the Warhawks defense looks like they will continue to struggle slowing teams down. Georgia Southern is known for the rushing attack however, it’s important to not overlook their quality defense that still should be one of the best in the Sun Belt this season. Louisiana Monroe got a 20-point victory on the road last season and I don’t see any reason why they won’t be able to cover this large spread at home this season. Take Georgia Southern to cover.
