The Navy Midshipmen will travel to Yulman Stadium to take on the Tulane Green Wave this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Navy Midshipmen improved to 2-0 (1-0 AAC) on the season after defeating the Connecticut Huskies 28-24 this past Saturday. Navy was able to get out to a 21-7 halftime lead however, needed a 1-yard TD run by Will Worth with just over three minutes left to play to secure the victory. Navy outgained the Huskies by a 373-354 margin and won the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for the Midshipmen was QB Will Worth who had 2 TD’s and 44 yards on 19 carries. On the season, Navy is averaging 20.0 ppg on 461.5 total yards per game (126.5 passing, 335.0 rushing). Offensively, Navy uses a triple-option attack and has been led by RB Chris High who had 3 TD’s and is averaging 106.0 yards/game on 8.5 carries/game. QB Will Worth was solid in his first game replacing QB Tago Smith, who Navy lost for the season in their 1st game, as he completed 6 of 8 passes for 130 yards while adding 2 TD’s on the ground. Leading the way for the Navy’s receivers is Jamir Tillman who had 6 receptions and 96 yards over the first two games. Defensively, Navy is holding their opponents to an average of 20.0 ppg on 409.0 yards per game (283.0 passing, 126.0 rushing). The Tulane Green Wave suffered a tough 7-3 loss at Wake Forest to open their season but had no trouble finding the scoreboard in their 2nd matchup of year and improved to 1-1 (0-0 AAC) on the season after defeating the Southern Jaguars 66-21 this past Saturday. Tulane outgained Southern by a 449-335 margin and won the turnover margin by a 4-1 margin. Leading the way for Tulane was Dontrell Hillard who 3 TD’s and 103 yards on 10 carries. On the season, Tulane is averaging 34.5 ppg on 364.5 total yards per game (73.0 passing, 291.5 rushing). Tulane and 1st year head coach, Willie Fritz, will be a run-heavy team this season as similar to Navy, they will operate out of the triple option. Leading the rushing attack for the Green Wave has been RB Dontrell Hilliard (8.5 att/game, 69.5 yards/game, 3 TD), QB Johnathan Brantley (11.00 att/game, 119.0 yds/game) and RB Josh Rounds (6.0 att/game, 34.5 yds/game, 2 TD). QB Glen Guiellette has completed 13 of 15 passes on the season for an average of 69.5 passing yds/game while also adding an average of 37.0 yds/game on the ground. WR’s Larry Dace III (2.0 rec/game, 19.0 yds/game) and Terren Encalade (2.5 rec/game, 12.0 yds/game) have been the leading receivers for the Green Wave. Defensively, Tulane is holding their opponents to an average of 14.0 ppg on 255.0 total yards per game (188.5 passing, 66.5 rushing). Tulane currently has a turnover margin of plus 2 and have been led by LB’s Eric Thomas (10 tackles) and Nico Marley (9 tackles).
The Midshipmen are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games. The Green Wave are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
If you like watching the triple-option, this will be the game to watch this Saturday as both teams will run ball consistently throughout the game. Tulane has to be excited after their performance last week against Southern however, we can’t overlook the offensive struggles they had against an average Wake Forest defense in their 1st matchup. Navy is the more experienced triple-option team and have the better defense and although they will be playing with heavy hearts after the passing of DB Brandon Jackson due to a car accident this last Sunday, I think the Midshipmen will be able to do enough to cover this small spread on the road. Take Navy to cover.
