The Charlotte 49ers dropped to 1-2 (0-0 C-USA) on the season after being defeating by the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 47-14, this past Saturday. Charlotte was down by a 34-6 margin entering the 4th quarter and also committed 3 turnovers in the loss. Charlotte was outgained by Eastern Michigan by a 357-346 margin and had trouble defending the pass, as Eastern Michigan QB, Todd Porter, finished with 285 yards, 2 TD, and an INT. Charlotte was without their most talented offensive players in RB Kalif Phillips who missed Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury, however, got an outstanding game by RB Robert Washington who had 120 rushing yards on 20 carries. On the season, Charlotte is averaging 26.7 ppg on 353.3 total yards per game (207.7 passing, 145.7 rushing). The 49ers offensive has been led by WR Austin Duke who had 2 TD’s on the season while averaging 6.0 rec/game and 80.3 yds/game. QB Kevin Olsen has completed 59.8% of his passes for 4 TD and 2 INT while averaging 139.7 yds/game. RB Robert Washington leads the Charlotte backfield as has 2 TD’s on the season and is averaging 65.33 yds/game on 12.0 att/game. Defensively, Charlotte is allowing their opponents to average 40.3 ppg on 479.7 total yards per game (332.7 passing, 147.0 rushing). The Temple Owls couldn’t overcome a 21-10 halftime deficit and fell to 1-2 (0-0 AAC) on the season after being defeated 34-27 by the Penn State Nittany Lions this past Saturday. Temple was outgained by Penn State by a 403-324 margin but was able to hang around in the contest as they forced three Penn State turnovers. Temple was able to score 2 rushing TD’s in the game but overall struggled on the ground as they gained just 38 rushing yards in the loss. Leading the way for the Owls was QB Phillip Walker who completed 25 of 34 passes for 286 yards and an INT. On the season, Temple is averaging 26.0 ppg on 292.0 total yards per game (192.7 passing, 99.3 rushing). QB Phillip Walker has led the way for the Temple offense completing 57.8% of his passes for 3 TD and 5 INT while averaging 192.7 yds/game. RB’s Ryquell Armstead (10.67 att/game, 40.33 yds/game, 2 TD) and RB Jahad Thomas (14.0 att/game, 52.0 yds/game, 2 TD) are the main weapons in the Owls backfield. Keith Kirkwood (4.0 rec/game, 48.7 yds/game, 2 TD) has been Temple’s biggest receiving threat. Defensively, Temple is holding their opponents to an average of 20.7 ppg on 293.3 total yards (128.7 passing, 164.7 rushing). DB’s Sean Chandler (20 tackles, 1 INT) and Delvon Randall (12 tackles, 2 INT) have led the way for the Owls defense.
The 49ers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 road games. The Owls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games in September.
Charlotte is in their 2nd season at the FBS level and although they are taking steps in the right direction to become at least an average FBS team, the 49ers are still a few years away in doing so. This is a lot of points for a Temple team that can struggle on offense to cover however, as I think both QB Phillip Walker and RB Jahad Thomas will have big days against a weak 49ers defense and that the Owls defensive will limit the 49ers offense to around 10-14 points, I’m taking Temple to cover in this one.
