The BYU Cougars suffered another close loss and fell to 1-3 on the season after being defeated by the West Virginia Mountaineers, 35-32, this past Saturday. BYU went down by a 35-19 margin early in the 4th quarter but scored two quick TD’s to make it a 3-point game and almost took the lead late before West Virginia picked off a Taysom Hill pass at the goal line. BYU outgained West Virginia by a 521-481 margin however, lost the turnover battle by a 4-2 margin. Leading the way for BYU was RB Jamall Williams who had 2 TD’s and 169 yards on 24 carries. On the season, BYU is averaging 20.8 ppg on 384.3 total yards per game (219.5 passing, 164.8 rushing). Offensively, BYU has been led by RB Jamaal Williams who had 3 TD’s and is averaging 104.25 yds/game on 19.75 att/game. Duel-Threat QB Taysom Hill has completed 60.3% of his passes for 4 TD’s and 7 INT while averaging 217.3 yds/game. Hill also the Cougars 2nd leading rusher as he had 2 rushing TD’s and is averaging 54.5 yds/game. Leading the way for the Cougars receivers have been Nick Kurtz (4.5 rec/game, 51.3 yds/game, TD), Moroni Laulu-Pututau (3.8 rec/game, 38.0 yds/game, TD), Colby Pearson (3.3 rec/game, 32.3 yds/game, TD). Defensively, BYU is holding their opponents to an average of 22.0 ppg on 382.3 total yards per game (261.5 passing, 120.8 rushing). BYU’s defense has forced their opponents to commit 11 turnovers on the season and have a turnover margin of plus 3.
The Rockets are 7-0-1 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games and 10-1 ATS in their last 11 road games. The Cougars are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 home games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
Toledo has had a nice start to their season but has yet to face much in terms of competition as their three wins have come against teams that are currently 1-10 on the season. BYU comes into this game with just a 1-3 however, BYU could easily be 4-0 right now as their losses (Utah, UCLA, West Virginia) have been by just a combined 8-points. Toledo is a solid ball club however, playing BYU in Utah is going to be their toughest game all season and as long as Taysom Hill and BYU can limit their turnovers, I think the Cougars will be able to cover this small spread at home. Take BYU to cover.
