In Week 5 college football action on Saturday, October 1, the Marshall Thundering Herd will head to Heinz Field to visit the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Marshall comes into this game at 1-2, following a loss to Louisville on Saturday. The Thundering Herd ran into a buzzsaw in that game, allowing Cardinals QB Lamar Jackson to account for seven touchdowns (five passing; two rushing). Marshall QB Garet Morrell could do very little in that game, going 9-of-21 for just 59 yards with two touchdowns. Tony Pittman led the Thundering Herd on the ground with seven carries for a paltry 54 yards, while Ryan Yurachek was the high man in receiving with one catch for 16 yards.

So far this year, Morrell has gone 11-of-29 for 96 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. We’ll have to see if Marshall can get Chase Litton back before this week’s game. On the ground, Keion Davis leads the charge with 36 carries for 152 yards and a TD, while Josh Knight has a team-high 10 catches for 148 yards and two scores of his own for the Thundering Herd.
On the Panthers’ side, they’re coming into this week’s game with a 2-2 record. Pittsburgh has dropped their last two games, most recently a 37-36 heartbreaker against North Carolina. In that one, Tar Heels QB Mitch Trubisky rallied the team on a final drive, hitting Bug Howard with a 2-yard score with just two seconds left on the clock. Pittsburgh’s Nathan Peterman had an efficient—if unremarkable—game on Saturday with a 14-of-18 line for 140 yards. Quadree Henderson led the team in rushing with 107 yards on nine carries, while James Conner led the Panthers in receiving with four catches for 64 yards.
That gives Peterman 643 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions on the year, while Conner sits on 79 carries for 347 yards and four scores. Conner also leads the Panthers in receiving with 13 grabs for 169 yards and two touchdowns.
The Thundering Herd are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games following a straight-up loss of more than 20 points, and 3-0-1 ATS in their last four against the ACC. Marshall is also 5-1 ATS in their last six games on grass, and 4-1 ATS in their last five games in October.
As for the Panthers, they’re 13-6-2 ATS versus a team with a losing record, and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games in October. Pittsburgh is also 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall, and 1-8 ATS in their last nine home games.
There’s not a whole lot to like about this game, as both teams come in reeling. That said, I do like Pittsburgh to be able to pick up the pieces and put together a solid win here, so I’ll take the Panthers.
