The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will travel to M. M. Roberts Stadium to take on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles this Friday afternoon in College Football action.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs won their 7th straight game and improved to 8-3 (6-1 C-USA West) on the season after defeating the UTSA Roadrunners, 63-35, this past Saturday. Louisiana Tech had no trouble securing the victory after taking a 35-7 halftime lead. Louisiana Tech outgained UTSA by a 473-310 margin and won the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin. Leading the way for Louisiana Tech was QB Ryan Higgins who completed 17 of 26 passes for 293 yards and 4 TD. On the season, Louisiana Tech is averaging 45.8 ppg on 540.7 total yards per game (357.3 passing, 183.5 rushing). Offensively, the Bulldogs have been led by QB Ryan Higgins who had completed 67.5% of his passes for 34 TD and 4 INT while averaging 346.0 passing yds/g. Trent Taylor (9.4 rec/g, 122.1 yds/g, 10 TD), Carlos Henderson (6.1 rec/g, 117.9 yds/g, 16 TD), and Jarred Craft (3.1 rec/g, 28.1 yds/g, 3 TD) have been the main receiving targets for Higgins this season. Leading the Bulldogs backfield has been Jarred Craft (14.6 att/g, 89.1 yds/g, 7 TD) and Boston Scott (4.9 att/g, 41.0 yds/g, 5 TD). Defensively, Louisiana Tech is allowing their opponents to average 29.8 ppg on 395.6 total yards per game (265.8 passing, 129.8 rushing).
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles lost their 3rd straight game and dropped to 5-6 (3-4 C-USA West) on the season after being defeated by the North Texas Mean Green, 29-23, this past Saturday. Southern Mississippi fought back from a 20-0 deficit to take the lead in the early 4th quarter, but couldn’t hang on for the win after allowing North Texas to score the final 9 points of the game. Southern Mississippi outgained North Texas by a 380-378 margin however, lost the turnover battle by a 4-3 margin. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was RB Ito Smith who had 113 rushing yards and 2 TD’s on 19 carries. On the season, Southern Mississippi is averaging 32.7 ppg on 475.8 total yards per game (289.9 passing, 185.9 rushing). Offensively, the Golden Eagles have been led by QB Nick Mullens who had completed 60.8% of his passes for 19 TD and 10 INT while averaging 287.1 passing yds/g. Mullens missed last game due to a concussion and is listed as questionable for this matchup. Leading the Golden Eagles backfield is Ito Smith who had 15 TD on the season while averaging 108.6 rushing yds/g. Allenzae Staggers (4.5 rec/g, 77.2 yds/g, 6 TD), Ito Smith (3.5 rec/g, 35.5 yds/g, TD), Korey Robertson (2.4 rec/g, 31.0 yds/g, 2 TD), and D.J. Thomason (3.4 rec/g, 37.2 yds/g, 4 TD) have been the leading receivers for Southern Mississippi. Defensively, Southern Mississippi is allowing their opponents to average 30.8 ppg on 337.9 total yards per game (175.7 passing, 162.2 rushing).
The Bulldogs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 conference games and 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Golden Eagles are 1-7 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 conference games.
This game has yet to be lines with the uncertain status of Southern Mississippi’s Nick Mullens however, even if Mullens can play, Louisiana Tech will be a huge favorite behind their 4th ranked passing attack. Louisiana Tech has won their last 7 games by an average of 23.7 ppg and as the Bulldogs Ryan Higgins shouldn’t have any trouble putting points on the board against the Golden Eagles defense, I’m leaning towards taking Louisiana State unless the number is outrageous. Please check back when the line has been posted.
