Old Dominion Monarchs 2017 Preview
The Old Dominion Monarchs have been labeled as a challenger in the CUSA in 2017 after winning ten games a season ago.
Overview: Bobby Wilder and the Old Dominion Monarchs are looking for an encore to last season’s 10-3 record but much will depend on a new quarterback and the passing attack.

Offense: The Old Dominion Monarchs lose 2016 starting quarterback David Washington and their top receiver in Zach Pascal which has many wondering about the state of the air game. Blake LaRussa will enter the year as Old Dominion's number one under center but he and his competition are largely unknowns. The Monarchs do have weapons at receiver in Isaiah Harper, Travis Fulgham, Jonathan Duhart and tight end Melvin Vaughn which makes for a potentially solid unit. The ODU rushing attack is a strength behind Raw Lawry and Jeremy Cox and an experienced offensive line which might have to do the bulk of the heavy lifting if the passing attack suffers some growing pains which means the quarterback is struggling.
Defense: While many can’t forget the days when Taylor Heinicke threw for a million yards to try and outscore opponents because the defense had little stopping power, things have changed for ODU who have slowly built a viable defense. The ODU defensive line brings back experience and size at tackle with four starters returning with three tipping the scales at 300+ pounds. Bunmi Rotimi and Oshane Ximines were playmakers at defensive end with over 14 sacks and 21.5 TFL so the Monarchs have plenty of potential up front. ODU does have questions at linebacker with four of the top five graduating including All CUSA performer TJ Ricks and Anthony Wilson who challenged for conference honors. Old Dominion does get back ten of their top 12 in the secondary so the unit boasts plenty of experience.
Special Teams: Baily Cate and Brad Davis return at punter and placekicker respectively while the Monarchs also get back Kesean Strong and Darell Brown in the return game so this unit threaten a top 50 ranking.
Outlook: If Old Dominion gets decent play under center the Monarchs could threaten last season’s win total but worse case, the team goes to another Bowl with so much talent in other areas.
