The Glass Bowl and the Toledo Rockets host the Elon Phoenix to start the 2017 college football season.
The Elon Phoenix suffered through a tough 2-9 season and need big improvements on both sides of the football to change their fortunes. The Phoenix generally struggled to move the chains and find the endzone with only 12 points per game on 277 yards with the passing attack leading the way with 155 yards. The Phoenix allowed 31 points on 422 yards with 229 yards coming on the ground. The good news for Elon is the offense has nine starters returning with quarterback Daniel Thompson leading the attack after throwing for 1,567 yards after injury thrust him into a starting role with Corey Joyner being the top target coming back after posting 26 receptions for 282 yards in 2016. De’Sean McNair led Elon on the ground a season ago with 522 yards on 136 carries and Malcolm Summers added 513 yards on 108 totes so the team is hoping experience results in more production. The Phoenix will be looking hard at Jalen Greene and Davis Cheek at quarterback which could mean a few players see action versus Toledo.
USA TODAY Sports
The Toledo Rockets are hoping 2017 is the year the team finally gets over the hump and wins the MAC West and the conference championship. The Rockets were 9-4 in 2016 and were able to do a bit of everything on the offensive side of the football with an average of 38 points on 518 yards with the number ten passing attack accounting for 323 yards. Toledo allowed under 26 points on 397 yards and were around the middle of the national rankings. The Rockets will have most of their talent back on offense led by quarterback Logan Woodside who has a dangerous group of receivers in Danzel McKinley-Lewis, Cody Thompson and Jon’Vea Johnson. The Rockets will lean on Terry Swanson to do damage on the ground with an experienced offensive line to run behind. The Rockets defense isn’t going to shut down opponents but this unit will hold their own.
The over is 5-0 in Elon Phoenix last 5 road games and the over is 5-0 in Elon Phoenix last 5 non-conference games while the over is 5-0 in Elon Phoenix last 5 games overall. The under is 3-0-1 in Toledo Rockets last 4 home games and Toledo Rockets are 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games while the under is 5-1-1 in Toledo Rockets last 7 games overall.
If the Rockets play as capable this should be a huge victory and the only thing that prevents a cover is if the wolves are called off early which is always a worry in these type of games…
