The Alcorn State Braves battle the FIU Golden Panthers in a week two college football bout.
The Alcorn State Braves go on the road to take the field with the Florida International Golden Panthers in week two. The Braves kicked off 2017 with an easy 50-21 victory versus DII Miles College. This was never close as A lcorn State jumped to a 24-7 lead heading in to the intermission. The Braves just outmuscled the Golden Bears with 568 yards with both the ability to run or throw whenever they wanted. ASU quarterback Lenorris Footman connected on 21-28 for 241 yards and a touchdown while using his legs for another 92 yards and a pair of trips to the endzone but he did throw two interceptions including a pick six. De’Lance turner paced the Alcorn State rushing attack with 128 yards and a score while PJ Simmons added 95 yards. The Braves defense suffered one breakdown with the Golden Bears ripping off an 83 yard TD run.
The FIU Golden Panthers will be looking for better performances on both sides of the football after opening the season with a 61-17 defeat at the Central Florida Knights. This was competitive through 15 minutes with FIU trailing 14-7 but Central Florida ended the first half on a 26-3 run and never let up. The Golden Panthers were outgained 587-335 and were hurt by the Knights through the air with 439 yards and four touchdowns allowed. Florida International struggled offensively as well which made three lost fumbles and an interception even more painful. Alex McGough completed 18-29 for 201 yards with a score and pick with 75 of those yards coming on a scoring toss to Thomas Owens in the first quarter that brought FIU to within 8-7. The Golden Panthers averaged over five yards per rush but running the ball didn’t happen often given the huge deficit that required yards and points in bunches. Napolean Maxwell was Florida International’s bright spot on the ground with a 51 yard scoring jaunt in the third but bright spots were far and few between.
Alcorn State are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 games in September. Florida International are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and Florida International are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall while Florida International are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in September.
I think Florida International has a huge advantage in athleticism here and should be able to score and contain Alcorn State. I say should because the Golden Panthers might decide to call off the wolves and prepare for the conference schedule…
