The New Mexico State Aggies collide with the New Mexico Lobos in the Rio Grande Rivalry on Saturday.

The New Mexico State Aggies will be looking for their first win against instate rival New Mexico in week two. The Aggies opened 2017 with a closer then expected 37-31 road defeat to Arizona State as a 26 point underdog. NMSU nearly  erased a 24 point deficit in the 4th quarter but time ran out on them. New Mexico State rolled to a 549-400 edge in yardage with nearly 400 passing yards but a pair of turnovers was costly. The Aggies ran the ball well although the offense did not run often with Jason Huntley leading the way with 84 yards on five touches including a 50 yard scoring jaunt while Larry Rose II added 60 yards on 13 touches. The Aggies thrived in the air with Tyler Rodgers hitting 40-57 for 398 yards and three touchdowns along with a pair of interceptions including a pick six. Jaleel Scott was the top option in the Aggies receiving corps with eight receptions for 149 yards with two touchdowns.

The New Mexico Lobos host instate rival the New Mexico State Aggies in the Rio Grande Rivalry on Saturday. The Lobos did what was needed in downing FCS Abilene Christian 38-14 to win their season opener behind a dominant second half that broke open a 14-7 contest after 30 minutes. UNM outgained the Wildcats 481-282 behind a balanced attack with a 3-2 advantage in turnovers including a 91 yard pick six by Jake Rothschiller in the 4th. New Mexico leaned on quarterback Lamar Jordan and he responded with an efficient 11-17 through the air for 213 yards and a touchdown while running for 52 yards on seven totes. Delane Hart-Johnson and Chris Davis Jr. gave the Lobos three catches apiece for a combined 132 yards while Romell Jordan ran for 65 yards on three tries  and Daryl Chestnut added 64 yards with four yard and 54 yard TD bursts.

Points have generally been plentiful in this matchup but a total for this game has not been released. I think the points are the way to go for now in what is a heated rivalry…
