The Southern Jaguars will travel to M.M. Roberts Stadium to take on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Southern Jaguars opened up there season with a nice 14-8 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs this past Sunday in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. Southern was able to jump out to a 14-6 halftime lead agianst the Bulldogs and held on late in the 2nd half behind their strong defense. Southern was outgained by South Carolina State by a 347-297 margin, however, did win the turnover battle by a 2-0 margin. Leading the way for the Jaguars was RB Devon Benn who had 5 rushes for 31 yards and a TD while also reeling in 3 catches for 57 yards. Southern also got a big game from one of their best defensive players, Danny Johnson, who made a key knockdown against South Carolina’s State star WR, De’Montrez Burroughs, in the Bulldogs last ditch effort to get a come from behind win. Southern averaged 39.8 ppg last season on the offense end and although they struggled to find a solid offensive rhythm against South Carolina State, has a decent offense that should once again be able to put up some decent offensive performances in the SWAC. The Jaguars defense, which allowed their opponents to average 28.3 ppg, comes back highly experienced and looks like the best defense in the entire SWAC.

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles couldn’t find enough answers on the offensive end and dropped their season opener after being defeated by the Kentucky Wildcats, 24-17, this past Saturday. Southern Mississippi went into halftime down 14-3 and couldn’t fight back after Kentucky scored 10 unanswered points late in the 3rd quarter to take a 24-10 lead. Southern Mississippi outgained Kentucky by a 364-254 margin however, did commit 3 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Korey Robertson who had 7 catches for 111 yards and 2 TD’s. Southern Mississippi had to replace QB Nick Mullens, who ended his career as the Golden Eagles all-time leading passer, but have to be encouraged by the performance of Kwadra Griggs who completed 15 of 26 passes for 222 yards and 2 TD’s. The Golden Eagles have some great weapons to surround Griggs this season led by RB Ito Smith (16.0 att/g, 37.0 yds/g), Korey Robertson (2.8 rec/g, 33.6 yds/g, 3 TD), and Allenzae Staggers (4.8 rec/g, 89.0 yds/g, 7 TD). The Southern Mississippi defense ranked 15th in total defense last season but did have trouble keeping teams off the board as Golden Eagles finished ranked just T-74th in scoring defense. Southern Mississippi lost a lot of important contributors from last year’s defense however, do return 6 starters led by DE Xavier Thigpen.
The Jaguars are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games and 0-5 SU in their last 5 games on the road. The Golden Eagles are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games at home.
Southern Mississippi didn’t look anything more than an average time in their season opener, and it although they have some playmakers on the offensive end, it looks as if it’s going to be hard for the Golden Eagles to have the same kind of offensive success they’ve had in recent years without Nick Mullens behind center. There has been no line posted as of yet for this contest, however, Southern is a very good FCS team that has the defensive talent to give Southern Mississippi trouble. If Southern is getting some points in this one, I’m leaning on taking the Jaguars. Please check back when/if the line is posted.
