The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs will travel to War Memorial Stadium (WY) to take on the Wyoming Cowboys this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs had no answers for the North Carolina A&T Aggies and dropped their season opener after the Aggies defeated the Bulldogs by a 45-3 margin this past Saturday. North Carolina A&T jumped all over the Bulldogs early in this one and cruised to victory after taking a 33-0 lead at halftime. Gardner-Webb was outgained by North Carolina A&T by a 458-114 margin and had no success in the passing game after only gaining 34 total yards through the air. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was RB Kerry Bernard who had 34 rushing yards on 12 attempts. Gardner Webb finished last season with a 5-6 record, however, have high expectations coming into 2017 after finishing last season with solid victories over the Big South Champions, Charleston Southern, and the Monmouth Hawks. Leading the way for the Gardner-Webb this season will be duel-threat QB Tyrell Maxwell who accounted for 17 total TD’s last season for the Bulldogs while leading Gardner-Webb in both passing (150.6 yds/g) and rushing (87.7 yds/g). The Bulldogs will hope that Adonus Lee (25.5 yds/g, 2 TD) will be become Maxwell’s go-to receiver this season. Gardner-Webb’s defense held their opponents to just 22.8 ppg last season however, do need to find replacement for all-conference LB’s Chad Geter and Aaron Cook.

The Wyoming Cowboys come into 2017 season with the expectations to once again challenge for the Mountain West Championship, however, the Cowboys had no answers in their season opener after being defeated by the Iowa Hawkeyes, 24-3, this past Saturday. Wyoming was outgained by Iowa by a 263-233 margin and couldn’t capitalize on any of the 4 turnovers they forced the Hawkeyes to make. Leading the way for the Cowboys was WR Austin Conway who had 7 receptions for 47 yards. Wyoming is led by QB Josh Allen, who is currently rated as a top-5 draft pick this season after finishing last season completing 56.0% of his passes for 28 TD’s and 15 INT while averaging 228.8 yds/game. Allen struggled in the season opener against the stout Iowa defense as he completed just 23 of 40 passes for 174 yards and 2 INT. Wyoming hopes that the RB duo of Milo Hall and Kellen Overstreet can help provide the Cowboys a reasonable running threat in the backfield after the Cowboys lost Brain Hill who finished last season with 22 TD’s while averaging 132.9 yds/game. Wyoming returned 8 defensive starters from last year’s team but will need to improve after finishing last season ranked 101st in scoring defense and 104th in total defense. Wyoming’s defense will be led by LB Logan Wilson and SS Andrew Wingard.
The Bulldogs are 0-5 SU in their last 5 games and 0-5 SU in their last 5 games on the road. The Cowboys are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games.
Gardner-Webb has to be disappointed with the effort they brought against a very good North Carolina A&T team however, the Bulldogs should be competitive in the FCS Big South Conference. Wyoming has one of the better quarterbacks in the country in Josh Allen, however, the Cowboys had no answers for the stout Iowa Hawkeyes defense in their season opener. This game has yet to be lined however, if Gardner-Webb is getting a large amount of points, I could see myself taking Gardner-Webb as I think Tyrell Maxwell will be able to find some success against the Cowboys. Please check back when/if the line is posted.
