The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will travel to Malone Stadium to take on the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles improved to 1-1 on the season after defeating Sothern Jaguars 45-0, this past Saturday. The Golden Eagles jumped all over the Jaguars early in this one and cruised to victory after entering halftime with a 35-0 lead. Southern Mississippi outgained the Southern Jaguars by a margin of 477-140 and held Southern to just 7 first downs in the victory. Leading the way for Southern Mississippi was QB Kwadra Griggs who completed 15 of 23 passes for 209 yards and 2 TD. On the season, the Golden Eagles are averaging 31.0 ppg on 420.5 total yards per game (294.5 passing yds/g; 126 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Southern Mississippi is led by QB Kwadra Griggs who has completed 61.2% of his passes on the season for 4 TD while averaging 215.5 passing yds/g. The WR duo of Korey Robertson (68.5 yds/g, 5 rec/g, 2 TD) and Quez Watkins (68.5 yds/g, 3 rec/g, TD) are the primary targets in the passing attack. RB Ito Smith is the primary ball carrier for the Golden Eagles and currently is averaging 57.0 yds/g on 16.5 att/g to go along with a TD. Defensively, Southern Mississippi is holding their opponents to an average of 12.0 ppg on 197.5 total yards per game (127 passing yds/g; 70.5 rushing yds/g). The Golden Eagles have forced 4 turnovers so far in the season and have a turnover margin of –1.

The Louisiana Monroe Warhawks are 0-1 on the season falling to Memphis 37-29 in the 1st week of the season. The Warhawks game against Florida State University was canceled last week because of hurricane Irma and will not be rescheduled. Leading the way for the Warhawks against Memphis was QB Garrett Smith who completed 10 of 17 passes for 171 yards, 1 TD, and an INT while also gaining 48 rushing yards on 12 carries. Offensively, Louisiana Monroe struggled last year as they averaged just 23.3 ppg (ranked 110th) on 373.3 total yards per game (ranked 100th). The Warhawks returned 7 starters on the offensive end including WR’s RJ Turner, Xavier Brown, and Marcus Green who combined for 11 TD’s last season. QB’s Garret Smith and Caleb Evans look as if they will split time this season and Evans also played well in their opening matchup against Memphis completing 11 of 20 passes for 108 yards and a TD. The Warhawks backfield will be led by the duo of Derrick Gore and Kayin White who combined for 90 yards and 2 TD’s on 25 carries in the season opener. Defensively, Louisiana Monroe brings back 8 starters from last year’s team that allowed opponents to average 39.1 ppg (ranked 122nd) on 480.3 total yards per game (ranked 119th).
The Golden Eagles are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games following a ATS win. The Warhawks are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games.
Southern Mississippi looked solid on both ends of the field against the FCS Southern Jaguars and must be encouraged by the play of QB Kwadra Griggs who has looked good in both games to start the season. Louisiana Monroe was one of the worst teams in College Football last season however, have 15 returning starters and played a decent Memphis team tough in their season opener. Louisiana Monroe will have the home field advantage in this one however, that is probably the only advantage that they will have over the Golden Eagles, and as I think Southern Mississippi will be able to pass at will against the Warhawks, I’m taking Southern Mississippi to cover this road spread.
