The San Diego State Aztecs improved to 2-0 on the young season after defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils, 30-20, this past Saturday night. San Diego State got multiple big plays from Rashaad Penny in the victory and pulled away after a 33-yard TD reception by Penny gave the Aztecs a 27-14 lead with 1:52 left in the 3rd quarter. San Diego State outgained Arizona State by a 352-342 margin and won the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin. Rashad Penny had a monster of a game as he had 353 all-purpose yards (216 rushing yds; 38 receiving yds; 99 kick return yards) and 3 TD’s. On the season, San Diego State is averaging 34.0 ppg on 432.5 total yards per game (155.0 passing yds/g; 277.5 rushing yds/g). Offensively, the Aztecs offense has been led by Rashaad Penny who had 3 rushing TD’s on the season while averaging an incredible 206.5 rushing yds/g on 19.5 att/g. QB Christian Chapman has completed 64.1% of his passes for 3 TD and an INT while averaging 146.5 passing yds/g. TE Kahale Warring (3.0 rec/g, 41.0 yds/g, TD) and RB Rashaad Penny (2.0 rec/g, 19.0 yds/g, TD) have been the main receiving targets for Chapman and the Aztecs. Defensively, San Diego State is holding their opponents to an average of 18.5 ppg on 328.5 total yards per game (278.0 passing yds/g; 50.5 rushing yds/g). The Aztecs have forced 4 turnovers so far this season and come into this matchup with a turnover margin of +2.
The Cardinal are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games following a straight up loss and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 road games. The Aztecs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win and 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games following a ATS win.
This game will feature two of the better RB’s in the country in Stanford’s Bryce Love and San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny. Stanford has a great offense, but I’m a bit concerned about how their rushing defense bounces back after allowing USC to gain 307 yards on the ground against them. San Diego State is known for their solid defense, especially their rushing defense, and between the fact that I think the Cardinal will have trouble containing Rashaad Penny and that the Aztecs are at home, I think the play in this one is to take San Diego State and the points.
