The SMU Mustangs and TCU Horned Frogs meet Saturday in college football action at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
The SMU Mustangs look for a statement victory to build on their fast 2-0 start to the season. The SMU Mustangs have split their last six road games. Ben Hicks is completing 50 percent of his passes for 424 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Hicks and Rafe Peavey have combined for seven touchdown passes this season. Courtland Sutton and Trey Quinn have combined for 334 receiving yards and six touchdowns while Myron Gailliard has two receptions. The SMU Mustangs ground game is averaging 171 yards per contest, and Xavier Jones leads the way with 113 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, SMU is allowing 23 points and 356 yards per game. The TCU Horned Frogs also look for a victory to start the season with a 3-0 record. The TCU Horned Frogs have lost four of their last five home games. Kenny Hill is completing 72.2 percent of his passes for 372 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Hill and Shawn Robinson have combined for six touchdown passes this season. Desmon White and Shaun Nixon have combined for 142 receiving yards and two touchdowns while TreVontae Hights has one reception. The TCU Horned Frogs ground game is averaging 218.5 yards per contest, and Darius Anderson leads the way with 173 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, TCU is allowing 3.5 points and 166 yards per game. Travin Howard leads the TCU Horned Frogs with 12 tackles, Ridwan Issahaku has two sacks and Ranthony Texada has one pass deflection.
The Mustangs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Horned Frogs are 0-9 ATS in their last 9 home games, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games in September and 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games overall. The Mustangs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Texas Christian, the road team is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings and the over is 6-2-1 in the last 9 meetings.
This should be a fun game between two in-state rivals who usually get up whenever they meet. The problem is TCU has beaten the breaks off the Mustangs over the years, which includes outscoring them 145-40 in the last three meetings. The difference in this game for me is the Horned Frogs defense, as we know both of these clubs can move the football and score points, but the Mustangs have issues stopping the other team at times. That hasn't been the case for TCU yet in its first two games. Look for the Horned Frogs to open this game up in the second half and win by three touchdowns.
