The Utah Utes improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating BYU 19-13, this past Saturday. Utah jumped out to a 19-6 lead with 2:35 left in the 3rd quarter and were able to survive a late BYU comeback in the 4th. The Utes outgained BYU by a 430-233 margin and won the battle of 1st downs 18-13. Leading the way for Utah was QB Tyler Huntley who completed 27 of 36 passes for 300 yards and also rushed for 89 yards and 1 TD. On the season, Utah is averaging 28.0 ppg on 464.5 total yards per game (270.5 passing yds/g; 194.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, the Utes are led by QB Tyler Huntly who has completed 73.5% of his passes this season for 263.5 yds/g and 1 TD and 1 INT. Huntley also leads the team in rushing with 79.5 yds/g on 18.5 att/g with 3 TD. Also in the backfield for the Utes is RB Zach Moss who has 1 TD and is averaging 74.5 yds/g on 16.5 att/g. Darren Carrington II (8.5 rec/g, 128.0 yds/g, TD) and Siaosi Wilson (3.5 rec/g, 59.5 yds/g) have been the leading receivers for Utah early in the season. Defensively, Utah is holding their opponents to an average of 14.5 ppg on 237.5 total yards per game (178.5 passing yds/g; 59.0 rushing yds/g). The Utes have forced 4 turnovers so far in the season and have a turnover margin of +1.
The Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss however, just 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games vs. a team with a winning record. The Utes are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. Mountain West opponents and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
San Jose State finished last season with ranked 103rd in both scoring offense and defense and it looks as if it could be another long season. Utah has looked good in their first two games and have to be encouraged by the play of QB Tyler Huntly who looks like has the potential to be a duel-threat start in the Pac-12. Utah’s defense should have no problems holding the Spartans to at worst, 7-10 points, as I think Huntley and Carrington II should have a big day against the San Jose State defense, I’m taking Utah to cover this large spread at home.
