The Southern Jaguars will travel to the Alamodome to take on the UTSA Roadrunners this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Southern Jaguars are 1-1 on the season after being defeated by Southern Mississippi 45-0, this past Saturday. The offense for the Jaguars was never able to gain traction against Southern Mississippi and were in the hole 28-0 by the end of the 1st quarter. The Southern Jaguars were outgained by Southern Mississippi by a 477-140 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 3-2 margin. Leading the way for the Jaguars was Darquez Lee who completed 5 of 10 passes for 56 yards. On the season, the Southern Jaguars are averaging 7.0 ppg on 218.5 total yards per game (143 passing yds/g; 75.5 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Southern has been led by RB duo of Herbert Edwards (14.0 att/g, 48 yds/g) and Devon Benn (6.5 att/g, 38 yds/g, TD). Southern will be without their starting QB Austin Howard for the 2nd straight game due to a strained PCL and it will be interested to see whether the Jaguars started last game but struggled (31.3 Comp %, 22 yards, 2 INT) and was replaced by Darquez Lee. The Jaguars leading receivers have been RB Devon Benn (57 yards, TD) and WR Jamar Washington (6 rec, 51 yards). Defensively, the Jaguars are holding their opponents to 26.5 ppg on 492 total yards per game (313,5 passing yds/g; 178.5 rushing yds/g). The Southern Jaguars have forced 4 turnovers on the season and have a turnover margin of 0.

The UTSA Roadrunners started their season later than expected after their season opener was cancelled against Houston, however, UTSA started their 2017 season with a bang after upsetting the Baylor Bears, 17-0, on the road. UTSA defense was solid throughout the game and the Roadrunners were able to hang on for the victory after taking a 17-7 lead with 14:12 left in the 4th quarter. UTSA outgained Baylor by a 375-274 margin and held the Bears to just 155 passing yards in the victory. Leading the way for the Roadrunners was QB Dalton Sturm who completed 15 of 20 passes for 155 yards and 2 TD while also gaining 98 rushing yards on 12 carries. UTSA finished the 2016 season averaging 29.2 ppg (ranked 65th) on 375.5 total yards per game (ranked 37th). Leading the way for the Roadrunners offense this season will be QB Dalton Sturm who finished last season completing 56.5% of his passes for 20 TD and 6 INT while averaging 166.9 passing yds/g. Sturm and the Roadrunners return their top two receivers in Josh Stewart (2.8 rec/g, 52.5 yds/g, 5 TD) and Kerry Thomas Jr. (2.7 rec/g, 42.7 yds/g, 8 TD). The UTSA backfield will be led by RB Jalen Rhodes who had 103 yards on 20 carries in the season opener. Defensively, UTSA returned 7 starters from a team that allowed an average of 27.9 ppg (ranked 63rd) on 392.0 total yards per game (ranked 55th) last season.
The Jaguars are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Roadrunners are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
Southern has one of the better defenses in the SWAC conference of the FCS, however, with many question marks on the offensive end, points might be hard to come by for the Jaguars this season. UTSA made a bowl game last season and with talent returning on both sides of the ball and have a defense that could lead UTSA back to another bowl game. This game has yet to be lined but if it is I would be looking at taking UTSA and the under as long as UTSA isn’t giving more than 10 points. Please check back when/if the line is posted.
